We wanted to go to El Djem. We have read in the tour guide that it was possible to walk to the taxi-plaza (10 minutes walking from the beach) and from there with the group-taxi.
We went to the plaza and it was very busy there. Taxi-drivers were shouting out names where they were heading to.
We asked which taxi went to El Djem. We were told to wait and a taxi came.....
It was a OPEL (with 6 places, 2 were build in the trunk!!!) and we sat in the trunk of the car.
We had to bend our head or else we bumped into the window.
Other (tunesiers) passengers sat down and we left.
There were oriental curtains and they played arabic songs (yeah!!).
The people in the car didn't speak Englisch.
But we arrived El Djem safely (bad roads!!).
We arranged that they pick us up at 18 h.
When it turned out later and got dark we got scared..
Luckely they came and we had another weard drive (broken door, exchanging driver without notice!).
We came home save, but NEVER a taxi-drive again in this country!!!!!!!

Being a popular sea resort, and also a large city, Sousse has an airport of its own, not really far from the city. Or, better, not really far from Monastir, but that’s just 20-25 minutes ride by taxi to the hotel where I lived.
There are charter flights into Sousse airport from most European countries, like Russia, Germany, Italy, France, UK and the rest of them. The main plus of them is that they are cheap, the main drawbacks are that often you can not get them without booking a hotel with the tour company (which might be more expensive than booking it on your own) and that you can go only for an amount of times equaling one week, two weeks, three weeks, or a month.

Taxi is a cheap and easy way to get around Sousse. Be sure they start the taximeter. The louage is a “Fixed Rate Long Distance Taxi” which will leave when it’s filled up. They drive fast and can be an adventure, I’ve been told.

Every taxi driver has some inside info or deal..steer clear! Most will charge you TD 2.000 or TD 2.500 to the train station or the Medina..but if they use the meter it´s only TD 1.700!!! The Tuk-Tuk ride from Port Kantouie to Sousse is fun but dangerous! These oversized passenger-carrying lawnmowers often have questionable brakes and non-functional instruments! No safety awards here! The daily morning express train to Tunis is a treat! Comfort Class includes air-conditioning and a complimentary beverage served with a pre-packaged wet-wipe served at your seat and costs TD 14.150 round trip! Ride the streetcar in Tunis..just do..you´ll be a better person for it!

The taxis in Sousse -and Tunisia in general- are cheap. You should never pay more than one dinar for a ride from for example Sousse medina to Port Kantanoui, which is a ten minute drive. It is also cheap to rent a taxi for a whole day. This way you wo'nt have to drive yourself, which is good since driving in Tunisia can be hard (and dangerous!) for tourists!

If yout hotel does not provide free transportation, you might have to shell out a little for a taxi to the airport, which is in neighboring Monistir about 20 miles away.
