When you go to Tunisia, you have to stop to see the oases. The one in Tamerza is beautiful, although very touristic (which means there are many boutiques set up on the way to the oasis, but oh well). We were in a tour which stopped in Chebika as well, but I found the one in Tamerza nicer.

This spectular place is the less visited of the three Mountain Oasis near Tozeur, and maybe it´s the most beautiful and the most interesting of them. The reason why? there´s no way to get here unless you have a car or are part of an organized tour (as i was). It´s located few kilometres from Tamerza very close to the Algerian border. It has a huge canyon streching for 3 kilometres, and it´s gorges have been sculpted by the river torrents. The place has been using as a set for some films as The English Patient and Star Wars. Definitely it was my favorite Oasis.

After our meal we walked down to see Tamerza's famed waterfall. This lies on the edge of the huge oasis and it's a very popular spot. There is a hotel nearby and the walk down to the waterfall is lined with shops selling typical souvenirs you see in all the shops around the area. There was also a couple of cafes on the route. All of these seemed to be empty as most people were down looking at the waterfall. It's pretty cool seeing a waterfall, no matter how small, in such a dry area of Tunisia.

Tamerza has a nice oasis and canyon, the water come from the mountain in small river and make a falls in some places. it's just a nice place you can walk, relax and refresh :), also you can visit the village and meet the local population and know about their traditions and life style.

This picture shows a close up on the window and on the landscape. The view from our room. on oued Tamerza and the old village was absolutely breathtaking and we could have stayed long admiring the lights of the sunset if we had not been hungry !

Inside our room we had a welcome gift. It was sweets packed in a fancy crystal paper. In the background, oued Tamerza and the old village of Tamerza can be seen. The room itself was simple but comfortable and perfectly clean.

This picture shows the passage leading to our room, on the right. This passage looks more sober with its white walls but anyway, a carpet covers the whole length of it and low carved tables are scattered along..

This picture shows a passage inside Tamerza Palace leading from the lobby (not shown) to a terrace. It looks very comfortable, with everywhere carpets covering most of the soil and curtains hanging on the walls.

This picture shows the entrance of Tamerza Palace and the parking. It has a very local look and does not seem to be a new building, though it has been built a few years ago (I have not found the exact date).

Tunisian outpost eyeing the Algerian border

The optional chapter title still echoes in my ears. Little children would practice their French in a very "hands-on" manner and try to make something useful of it by asking tourists for a pen. Maybe...
