  • Chott El Djerid in March - Tozeur
    Chott El Djerid in March

In fairly flat parts of the Sahara, when the relief does not allows the waters to flow towards the sea, they gather at the lowest elevations and give chotts. As the water evaporates, it leaves salts that concentrate and give a mainly white crust. It is usually dazzling white but in some places can be red, green, brown...
The Chott El Djerid is the widest (about 80 km from west to east). Driving across the chott is usually a great experience. On that occasion, it was not : there remained some sand wind and the sky was yellowish and not clear in the distance and as it had not been very hot yet, the water had not evaporated enough. In winter the chott is covered with water. Summer is the most spectacular with a crust of salt for kilometers. In Spring it looks like driving across an extensive roadwork or a wasteland ! Disappointing ! We will have to come back.
I have older slides of the Chott in summer. I will scan them and add them here.

    Archaeological and Traditional Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The guard, dressed in the traditional red coloured Berber's cloths and armed with the long speer, stands in front of the section which is closed for the public visitors. The dress code indicate what was uniform of the Berberian warriors in the medieval times.

Archaeological and Traditional Museum is probably the most interesting sight of Tozeur, especially if you are forced to spend a cuople of hours here, as it happened to my group. The building, where the museum is situated, looks very nice surrounded by the desert greenery.

  • You should note that on this door, there are three door knockers. The left one is for men, the right one for women and the lower one for children. The sound of each hammer allows knowing who is coming before opening : if it is a man, the women inside the house hide themselves. If it is a woman, the men inside hide…

    Archaeological and Traditional Museum

  • Inside the museum you can see costumes and Arabic books, muskets and powder-horns, beduin silver, furniture and clothes. Black African statuettes are explained by the presence here of 19th century slaves.
I was in particularly attracted with local craft-works, there are a couple of huge and beautifully decorated vases, like this you can see on the picture.

  • ''Le Paradis'' in Tozeur is at the same time a botanical garden and a zoo. In the botanical garden are grown all the plants found in oasis : palm trees, banana trees, wines, etc... In the zoo, they have desert snakes, scorpions, lions, fennecs and a camel. The camel is called Ali-Baba and makes a show by drinking a can of Coca-cola !

    Palms, palms, palms
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tozeur has one of the largest palmarie I have ever seen in my life. Not a big deal, probably, since I do not live anywhere near palms, but still:)))

While in broad daylight they might disappoint some people (I have heard my fellow travellers grumbling that everything was too dusty to admire!) they are absolutely lovely at dusk, sunset, or early night.

If there is something in Tozeur one should not miss, that is it.

    Palmerie
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out the "Palmerie" a little forest of palms. We had a "guide" (a guy who tagged along who only wanted kisses or money, be careful of them, especially if you are women travelling alone as my friends and I were) But it was definately worth it to look around. There were even a couple of cows nestled in amongst the trees, what an odd sight that was!
