Algerian Border
Algeria is no longer the no-go area is was for many years but around Chebika, Tamerza and especially Mides the number of Tunisian guards and army visibly increases. We were not stopped by the guards though on one occasion near Mides they did give us a long, cold stare as we drove past. Why all this security? In 1995, there was an incident at Chebika when 6 members of the Tunisian National Guard were murdered by Algerian insurgents. Of course, the official report by the Tunisian government didn't say this. According to Tunisian news reports, the men died in a car crash.
