Black Market Money Exchangers

It is easy to get money changed on the street without a bank or exchange house. If you do this take caution. You must really know the going rate as the guys will try to give you much less than it is worth. They also do a 'fancy' counting your money back to you so they seem to give you more than they actually do. Only do this if you are in an EMERGENCY and dire straights. Do it in the open and don't show all you have. Try to prepare ahead of time so you don't have to do this.

Malaria ---- Take Precautions

Malaria is prevelant throughout Uganda. Don't listen to the locals. Most places say Yes there is malaria but not here in our village/area. It rains a lot in Bushenyi and mosquitoes love water. So be sure to take your prophylaxis as prescribed and also you can use sprays on your skin and clothes. It is also recommended to wear long sleeves but I can't do that as it is just too hot !! Just be faithful with your pills and you should be ok. There are no guarantees. We have all gotten malaria one time or another over the years no matter what we did. But don't be discouraged lots of people don't get it too !!

Don't Get Over Charged

Please be aware that being a foreigner especially if you are not black, but a mazungu and it is easy to tell you are not from here, you will be charged more than the real price. Try to know your prices before buying things and be sure to stand firm on it. Even in restaurants and food stores. I usually have a local go with me to make usre too. Just makes it easier. But many are very honest and will give youa great deal especailly if you are buying a bunch of things. *
