Not a million miles from Fort Portal, well just a few kilometres down the Kasese road is Mugusu home of possibly the best market in East Africa. The market is on every Wednesday. As well a the usual fruit, veg, and goats for sale it may well be the best place to buy mitumba (second hand clothes).
Unlike other markets in Uganda the clothes here are sold straight out of the bails that they are imported into the country in. You can hear the metal straps that fasten the bails of clothes being cut open, it’s just up to you to rout through the mitumba to find some suitable clobber. Because the clothes come straight out of the bail it means prices are really cheap.
What makes this market appealing is the backdrop of the rwenzori rising up behind the market.
