 | Uganda General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 43 | | Uganda is predominantly agricultural country, not much of industry can be seen around. It is amazingly green, not in accordance with the predjudice most of us have about Africa. I will remember it mostly because of lots of fruits around and its delicious taste. Back home I had ananas many times besause it is one of my favourite fruit, however, here in Uganda I had opportinity to enjoy in its real and original taste which cannot be compared to those we found in Europe. One of my favourite aspects of Uganda was its rich and varied bird life. Birds are very easy to spot and are found along the side of the road as well as in nature parks. We identified somewhere in the region of 70 different birds on our trip, many more can be seen if you take the time and efford and have a good bird guide with you. Leave a Comment

We shifted from Uganda to India in the year 2006. After having spent 2 years in Uganda, we knew that the rail and road transport is not trustworthy, hence we hired the service of Kuhene Nagal. We wanted our cargo to be sent by air. The day we left the country, I met the marketing personnel who had already collected our cargo and promised me that the cargo should reach cochin within 4 days. After 10 days of reaching my destination, I still had no clue of my cargo. When I finally got in touch with KN I realised the cargo was still lying in the Nairobi Airport. It took another week before we got our cargo. Overall a frustrating experience.

Uganda lies on the Equator. You are likely to cross it at some point. And probably every tourist will stop and take a picture (if one doesn't travel by public transport)... Those monuments were set on both sides of the road - on the road from Kampala to Masaka - and between Ishaka and Kasese, just north of Queen Elizabeth N.P. - (don't know about the smaller roads) Leave a Comment

Mmm, let's see how many of you (especially those who know me personally) are now smiling, finding out that the first tip I create on my first Africa adventure ever is a beer tip... (It's just because it's a very easy one - and hey, of course beer is one of my favorite things about Uganda!) You get half liter bottles of "Nile Special", "Bell", "Club", "Pilsener" and many (less popular) others, it's pretty good brew, has about 5.5 - 6.0% and costs between 0.75 - 1 $ (in a bar). My personal favorite was "Nile" (pictured). Cheers! Leave a Comment

I travelled with a pet from Benin to Uganda. The rules and regulations are not very clear and hence I thought that it would be a nce idea to post it here. Firstly if you are travelling with a pet or bringing the pet into the country. He should be medicaly termed fit by a doctor upon entering the country or he should have already completed this formality from the country that he is coming from. Then all the documents along with a request to import the pet should be sent to Animal Husbandary Department (a Clearing Agent will do this for you, or you can get it done yourself if you are in the country). This department is in Entebbe. The department will issue you a letter. On the day of arrival, the C&F agent should be present at the airport to receive the dog. He should have the letter from the animal husbandary department and the relevant vaccination details and the letter from the doctor. It costs me 110,000 ushs to get everything done, but my pet waited for only 30 mins after arrival.

Bananas are everywhere in Uganda, any little patch of green in the country usually contains at least one banana tree. So it is not surprising that the local spirits in Uganda like Waragi and Kasese are made from bananas. There are several different brands of Waragi with “Uganda waragi” being the premium brand, it’s triple distilled and goes down far too easily. I find it goes really well with Krest bitter lemon. It tends to be my drink of choice when I feel the Nile special is leaving me bloated. As well as “Uganda Waragi” there are several other brands but non are as smooth and as sweet as Uganda Wa’ while others are downright rough. Don’t expect other brands to come in bottles either, some are only available in plastic sachets or sometimes depending on the hostelry you are in, poured from a jug! Uganda Wa' now comes with a dolly proof top!!! Leave a Comment

Beer beer we want more beer. Everybody’s cheering get the f***ing beer in. Ugandans love a beer and unlike their near neighbours in Kenya they like it cold. After a hot sticky day walking around Kampala what could be more refreshing than a cold bottle of "Nile Special". There are 2 main bottled beer brewers in UG. Nile breweries who are based in Jinja and Uganda breweries who do their stuff in Port Bell. Nile produce Nile Special, Chairman ESB, Club and Eagle. It is possible to take a tour of the Nile breweries plant just over the river from Jinja, something I have yet to do but its pencilled for my next trip there. Uganda Breweries produce Bell, Senator, Pilsner and Guinness. Leave a Comment

The best exchange rates are in Kampala, where there is a big quantity of banks and will be able to sell you not only Uganda's currency but also change the remaining shillings into Kenyan, Tanzanian or other african currencies if you have to continue your trip to other close countries. Think that prices in Uganda are quite low ( meal 3$, stay in a national park's banda around 5-10$) and that in the more touristic places like lodges you have to pay in dollars, so is not necessary to change too much money. We were told that the rates for changing money were specially bad in Fort Portal area as well as in the airport. Leave a Comment

It is possible to climb up Sororti rock but you have to get permission first. In the last few years since the rise of the LRA there are now armed arrow boys on top of Soroti rock guarding the water tank that supplies the town. If you want to climb the rock you will need to get permission from Soroti Municipal Council they have an office; if you walk from the centre of town towards the rock you won’t be a million miles away from the office. Their number is 045 61601, you will need to produce the written permission when you get near the top of the rock, a couple of cigarettes will keep the well armed arrow boys sweet. While I was climbing the rock I heard a story of when a local councillor wanted to celebrate the New Year by setting of fireworks from the top of the rock. When midnight came the fireworks were lit and the subsequent bangs and flashes caused the vervet monkeys that inhabit the rock to run in all directions. The petrified monkeys ran down the rock and into the homes of the IDPs who’s camp was situated at the bottom of the rock who then themselves came running out of their homes. Leave a Comment
