Kampala District Warnings Or Dangers

Tourist Fines!

by danthepastor

Be very careful about the scooter taxis. It is apparently an offence for a passenger not to wear a helmet. I don't think I saw any passengers wearing helmets while I was there, but apparently if you are white the the police are likely to stop you and you'll get a spot fine. We went on the bikes before we knew this - we got away with it, but I met other people who weren't so lucky! If you're willing to take the risk, this is possibly the scariest and most exciting experience of your life! Also, be careful about silly things like jumping out of a minibus window! I know it seems odd, but we were in the hotel car park when one of our team jumped out. A policeman saw him and he got a spot fine of 15,000shillings (after much bartering).
