Akii Bua Stadium
Footie is big in Uganda but when I was in lira I was asking the local lads about the chances of catching the local team Boroboro at the Akii Bua Stadium. Apparently I had just missed a mid-week game the day before I arrived. Non of the locals I asked were in the slightest bit interested in the team who are about to enter a relegation dog fight to stay in the top division but they were all keen to talk the MUFCers in the English premiership.
They usually clear the field of cattle before a game.
The stadium is named after John Akii Bua the 400m hurdler who broke the world record and won gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He was originally from this part of Uganda but had to do a runner from Uganda when Amin was in power having to spend some time in a refugee camp in Kenya.
Lira golf course has got the usual hazards of a golf course plus an untold amount of tracks criss crossing the course,
Someone told me that at a time when Kony was terrorising the area the golf course was used as an IDP camp hence the tracks.
