After we left hotel Barbas in the deep south of Western Sahara at 6.30 am, we had our first breakfast in the car, consisting in biscuits and softdrinks, bought in the shop of hotel Barbas.

In the late morning we made a stop at a fuel station for diesel and a brunch. Between Guergarat and El Dakhla you will find allready several fuel stations. The fuel station we visited had a nice restaurant with a great choice of food, concerning we were in the middle of the desert.

We were in a hurry to drive the 800KM to Laayoune from hotel Barbas in the deep south of Western Sahara to Laayoune, where we wanted to reach in time to arrange the insurance for the car the same day.

So were very happy to find a place to have a good and quick meal along the route at a fuel station.

We had delicious omelets, salade, fresh bread, yoghurt, coffee and tea and paid only 7 euros for four persons.

  • A pot of mint tea - Western Sahara
    A pot of mint tea

A visit to Western Sahara is not a real visit if you didn't drink the traditional mint tea. This is by far the most popular drink in the country and it is available pretty much everywhere. It's not only drunk at home or in a café, but you'll also see it in small shops, where the salesmen prepare it on the ground in a corner, or in any office where the people offer it to their customers as a sign of hospitality.

Mint tea has a base of green- or black tea, with a lot of sugar added to it. After this a lot of fresh mint leaves are added, giving the tea its very special taste. Sometimes the leaves stay in the pot, and you only have the real tea in your glass, but sometimes you get a glass full of leaves that you have to drink from.

Mint tea is the standard tea over here. If you just order tea you'll always get this. It is also the cheapest drink you'll find. For 50 cents you can easily buy yourself a full pot of tea, which is enough for 2 or 3 glasses. The special way of pooring it into the glass will be visible all around you: just have a look and copy it...

    Strawberry/orange juice

When you are in Western Sahara and you are thirsty: don't doubt for a single second and order a glass of fruit juice! In a lot of places in the world you can get good fruit juice; which tastes completely different from the rubbish they serve you in Europe. But nowhere I had so made delicious juice, in so many different places as here in Western Sahara (and Morocco).

The orange juice is fantastic; exactly how it should be. And in one place in Laayoune I also has it mixed with strawberry juice. This combination is even better! Besides this you also find a lot of avocado juice. This is not my personal favorite, but it's also pretty good and it can serve as a real meal: it's thick and very healthy.

You'll find fruit juice stall everywhere, and everywhere it will taste amazing! This really is a must-try! And that for only 50 cents or less per glass...

  • Fresh seafood in Western Sahara - Western Sahara
    Fresh seafood in Western
    Sahara
    by Pieter11, 4 more photos
Another local speciality in Western Sahara is the delicious fresh seafood you can get here. Not a coincidence: fish is one of the country's most important export products, next to desertsand and minerals. The fish that is caught here can be at the market the same day and on you plate a few hour later: here you'll get it as fresh as possible.

I must say: you don't see fish on every menu in the country. In most places you only see the typical dishes with chicken and goatmeat. But when you walk over the market you see that fish is in fact a popular product here and in the better restaurants you'll see that the quality is very good here.

Whether you try a piece of fish (or an entire fish) or you try the other seafood like octopus or shrimps, you'll definitely have a great meal!

In the harbour in Laayoune-Plage you can see how the fish comes in by the fishingboats and here you can buy your own fresh seafood straight from the source!

Mint tea is delicious but watch it: the locals put so much sugar in it that it is almost undrinkable for foreigners. As it is freshly made just ask for less or no sugar at all.
