Imbri's General Tip

by Imbri

Wandering through the rain forest to see Victoria Falls (Mosi-ao-Tunya - The Smoke ThatThunders) from the base. We spent an hour playing amateur primatologist and watching theresident baboon troop interact. We were a little nervous walking by the dominant males, but theytook no notice of us as long as we averted our eyes!

1. VISIT THE FALLS!2. GO WHITE WATER RAFTING!3. BUNGI JUMP4. BOOZE CRUISE5. GAME DRIVE(not in that order of course). there are alot of 'adventure sports' to do while in zambia, and the manager of the backpackers place you are residing at should have a full itinerary of things to do. If you are staying at Jollyboys, the manager will usually take people to the falls everymorning. However, transportation back to Jollyboys is usually left to you, unless you happen to catch the manager when she is leaving. my best memory of zambia would be one thati can barely remember, my roomie and i met a Kiwi on a bus from Windhoek to Vic Falls, she ended up getting off the bus in bostwana to walk across into the Zambezi border. we ended up in zimbabwe with another kiwi who was going to meet her friend in zambia. (you can guess who it was, much to our surprise). we all ended up smoking some doobies and...

Let go of yourself and your inhibitions. Zambia was my first big trip and it scared me to death. I was sure that I was going to die from some poisonous bug bite or be kidnapped by some crazed african. (not meant to be mean..this was just my sheltered mind thinking) When you open yourself up to new experiences you gain so much more. Don't be close minded. I miss the beauty. No sky rises. No McDonalds. No 3 story malls. Just the trees, the animals, the sky, and the people...it was amazing.

Go to Victoria Falls. See it, fly over it, go white water rafting down the Zambezi, do everything. Being stuck at Victoria Falls for two weeks whilst the government changed the currency over! Couldn't ask for a better place to be stuck.

Cross into Zimbabwe!

by TracyG

Go across the bridge into Zimbabwe and watch the bungee jumpers on the bridge.......A spectacular site, and makes you glad that you have your feet firmly on the ground.... Unless of course bungee jumping is your thing!!!! Seeing a pregnant hippo coming out to graze, on the night safari in South Luangwa NP.

get to North Luangwa. It is very isolated, but so beautiful, and there is only one place to stay...Buffalo Camp, run by Mark Harvey, a fantastic guy who really knows his stuff and will give you the experience of a lifetime, whether it be sleeping in his treehouse, fending of soap-eating hyenas, or sleeping outside by the river. The accomodation is straw bungalows, with open-air bathrooms, really special. and great food too. swimming naked with a gorgeous bloke in the hot bubbling springs at Shiwa, moonlight on the bubbles and lots of squeaking bats flying around, dripping palms....it will never be forgotten.

robmcmumbi's General Tip

Well, I must say, I married my wife who I met in Lusaka, Zambia. She provides my fondest memories each and every day that I lay eyes on her. Her name is Maggie Mumbi, and she is pictured here. She is the sweetest, most wonderful woman I've ever met. Tough to beat that, eh? Sure, the Falls, the wildlife, the people, the work, the countryside and the differences in culture are all wonderful...My fondest memory? I'm having 'em now.

by robmcmumbi

If I had 8 days left to live, and I were spending it in Zambia, I would do two things. I would begin by taking a four day, three night safari in South Luangwa National Park, a one and a half hour flight north east of the capital city, Lusaka. Then I would travel through Lusaka and go back southwest to Livingstone walking across the border to see Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side. On my last day, I would spend my time on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, at the place I call 'THE EDGE.' (See 'Off the Beaten Path, below.')

Grete's General Tip

I will never forget our first night in Zambia. We had arrived by plane in Lilongwe, Malawi and were picked up there by car. We were staying near a small village, Mfuwe, three hour drive on dirt roads from Chipata. We arrived there after dark and were a bit unsure of the surroundings. The house was just outside one of the entrances to Luangwa National Park and naturally the wildlife was literally all around you. We were having a late dinner on the veranda listing to the hippos in the nearby lake, when all of a sudden we heard the sounds of big animals getting closer. We went inside and turned off the lights and stared, eyes wide open, out into the darkness of the garden. There comes three giraffes graciously out from between the trees. For a while, they grazed on what was meant to be a lawn, before they moved on into the darkness from where they had come. Seeing these fantastic animals...

Visit the area that use to be a zoological compound back in the 40s and 50s. It still has scuplture rising from the ground. You can see the potential and how it was once a very beautiful garden. Even neglected it is still inspiring The people were friendly and their was a sense of peace. Although it was very dry, the flowers wer still blooming and the grass was very green. Believing in the Bible, Zambia has the peacefulness of God.
