We spent three days and two nights on the river, getting as close to wildlife as never before. This was the only time I was disappointed by our local guide. Beeing the youngest in the group, my son was placed with him in the canoe, and in front and in the leading canoe. We were told that most of the job was done by the one sitting behind. But he did not do anything, the canoe slowed the others down and they started muttering about the lazy child. After a break I volountered to change with my son, and I had the same experience as he: The guide did nothing, I had to do all the work, it was really hard. And the others muttered again, this time about this weak, lazy, old women in the leading canoe. I then told Warren, Drifters' guide, that he should put one of the strong, young men in the front canoe, since it seemed like the local guide was sick or weekened (I did nor use the word lazy!) Other than that, the trip was overwhelming! One of the days we were waved onshore to participate in the celebration of the kill of an elephant. Hunting elephants is strictly forbidden, but this one had damaged the crops of a village and was dangerous to people, and a special permit had been issued. This way the village had food for days, and a big party was under preparation. We were not allowed to take pictures while canoeing due to the danger of sailing right into the mouth of a yawning hippo, thus all the pictures are taken on the way back up the river, when we enjoyed the luxury of a motorized boat ;-) Pic 2: Local fishermen Pic 3: The Zimbabwe shore, national park Pic 4: Elephants on the shore Leave a Comment Directions: Kafue, Zambezi and Chongwe rivers

Victoria Falls Chasm by stevezero The waters of Victoria Falls do not drop into an open basin but rather into a chasm that varies in width from 80 to 240 feet (25 to 75 metres). This chasm is formed by the precipice of the falls and by an opposite rock wall of equal height. The chasm's only outlet is a narrow channel, and through this gorge, which is less than 210 feet (65 metres) wide and 390 feet (120 metres) long, flows the entire volume of the Zambezi River. At the gorge's end is the Boiling Pot, a deep pool into which the waters churn and foam at flood time. Just below the Boiling Pot, the gorge is spanned by the Victoria Falls (Zambezi) Bridge, which carries rail, automobile, and pedestrian traffic between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Leave a Comment

Lake Kariba Sunset by stevezero The construction of the Kariba Dam, created a huge artificial lake behind it. It is possible to get a cruise on the lake, which forms part of the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. We chose a cruise in the evening, which involved the sunse over the lake. We also saw plenty of birds and lots of hippos. It is eerie to see the remains of the dead trees which still protrude above the surface of the lake. Leave a Comment

Victoria Falls by stevezero The Victoria falls is a spectacular waterfall located about midway along the course of the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia to the north and Zimbabwe to the south. Approximately twice as wide and twice as deep as the Niagara Falls the waterfall spans the entire breadth of the Zambezi River at one of its widest points (more than 5,500 feet [1,700 metres]) Leave a Comment

The Kariba Dam by stevezero The concrete arch dam across the Zambezi River at Kariba Gorge, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe was completed in 1959, the structure is 420 feet (128 m) high with a crest 1,899 feet (579 m) in length and a volume of 1,032,000 cubic m. The dam creates Lake Kariba, and it supplies some 6,700,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, generated by Kariba North Bank and South Bank companies (Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively). Its creation required the resettlement of more than 30,000 Batonka tribespeople of Zambia and the evacuation of thousands of wild animals ("Operation Noah"). Leave a Comment

Victoria Falls by stevezero At the falls, the river plunges over a sheer precipice to a maximum drop of 355 feet (108 metres). The falls' mean flow is almost 33,000 cubic feet (935 cubic metres) per second. The Zambezi River does not gather speed as it nears the drop, the approach being signaled only by the mighty roar and characteristic veil of mist for which the Kalolo-Lozi people named the falls Mosi-o-Tunya ("The Smoke That Thunders"). Victoria Falls Bridge by stevezero The Victoria Falls Bridge was commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1900, although he never visited the falls and died before construction began, he expressed his wish that the "railway should cross the Zambezi just below the Victoria Falls. I should like to have the spray of the falls over the carriages." The bridge carries rail, automobile, and pedestrian traffic between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is possible to wlak over the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe quite easily these days with little formalities. Leave a Comment

Victoria Falls Craft Village by stevezero Near the Mosi o tunya hotel where we stayed is the Victoria Falls Craft Village. This is a good place to buy your African craft items, however the vendors can be a bit pushy. Bartering is the name of the game and it is also possible to part excahnge T shirts, electrical goods, footware or any other article that is in short supply in Zambia Leave a Comment
