Boiling Cauldron

by John195123

A lesser-known attraction at Vic. Falls is the Boiling Cauldron, I believe it's called, a place where the water (especially during high season) forms a swirling, chaotic vortex. Even in the low season many kayakers enjoy the area. A word of caution: the long, uneven stairs/path leading down to the cauldron are frequented by monkeys. You access the cauldron via a side path- I don't recall exactly where.

Victoria Falls

by John195123

You can visit Victoria Falls of the Zambezi River from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides, both of which offer distinct views of different parts. A view down the falls is best viewed from Zambia."The Smoke that Thunders" is an amazing place for geology- if you trace the history of the falls back over the millenia, you'll see that it is just the newest incarnation of the falls, which, from its base, zig zags downstream through the previous locations of the falls that existed long before Dr. Livingstone came across the falls in 1855, long before even the Kololo and other tribes even existed. Stretching for almost one mile, Mosi-oa-Tunya, as the locals call it, when flowing at full capacity, drops a little under 550 million (I've also heard 550,000) cubic meters per minute onto the rocks over 100 meters below, making it the largest sheet of water in the world. If you are staying in...

On The Edge

by Acirfa

Wow, what an experience. The falls were not in full flood so we took advantage of a tour called 'On the Edge' and it sure was that!We hiked across the river bed, past rock pools and along the edge of the falls, at times being no more than a metre from the edge, until finally we came across the still flowing part of the falls. We swamn up river in order to cross it safely and not be swept over the edge in the current, turning only when we were safely able to cut across the force and grasp the rocks in the centre of the flow. A small pool was pointed out and we were taken to swim in it and hold onto the wall on the edge of the falls and with each holding the others feet in turn, we peered over the edge to view the fall of the water gushing past our heads at a great speed and to witness the astounding beauty, to hear the sound like thunder crashing so loudly onto the rocks below - amazing!...

Abseiling

by Acirfa

So much to do and so little time, so we opted for abseiling. The cliff was sheer and it was a long drop down. Enjoyed it, well I had a sense of achievement albeit I was left with bruised ribs and aching arms, I believe Michael got off a little more lightly in that respect and considering he really only completed the event to please me I think he might say it was ok. The walk back up to the base was probably more enjoyable, a 20 minute or so walk through bush and over rocks was a good amount of exersize in the heat and earned us huge gulps of water at the stop point before completing the final run back to the top.Other activities on offer here are: flying fox, bungy jumping, rafting, sunset drift, tiger moth, helicopter and quad biking to mention but a few.Remember book your activities early or you may miss out especially if you have limited time in the area.

visa

by kiberenge

The visa rules for Zambia all seem a bit vague - if you are on a list with pre-booked accommodation or in some form of a tour group, the visa requirement is waived. However if you’re not on the list, it seems that you need to part with your US Dollars

A helicopter flight above the Vic Falls

by NikkiGerbrands

A lot of people take this opportunity to fly above the Vic Falls so you are one of many others, but it's really worth it. I had never been in a helicopter before, and flying above de Vic Falls is really a great way of experiencing this for the first time!

Victoria Falls

by Bwana_Brown

Victoria Falls is probably the greatest sight that I have seen in my world travels - 'The Smoke that Thunders' in the local language (recent update - you must also see the Grand Canyon!). You can see lots of great shots of the falls on other travel sites so I reserved this spot for my greatest thrill of all - on Honeymoon with my wife Susan as we sit beside the Zambezi just above the Falls! If you visit the falls during the wet season when the Zambezi is in full flow, you will get totally drenched from the rising spray. The roar of the water is amazing as it goes over the 1-mile wide precipice. I actually took a few photos of this natural 'Wonder of the World' just over two years earlier (December, 1972) when I spent Christmas there with some fellow volunteers only months after arriving in Zambia. They show a ground level overview of Victoria Falls from the Zambian side as well as another...

Victoria Falls

by MikeAtSea

These spectacular waterfalls are a designated World Heritage Site as well as being one of the natural wonders of the world. Ever since their existence was publicized by David Livingstone in 1855, visitors have traveled from all over the world to witness this amazing natural phenomenon. The falls are 1.7 km wide and have an average height of 100m.The volume of water passing over the falls is 550,000 square meters per minute on average, although this can increase dramatically during the high water period between March and May. The geology of this area is fascinating, the original falls were actually 8km downstream of the present ones. Erosion over millions of years, combined with weaknesses in the basalt rock perpendicular to the flow of the Zambezi have gradually worn away the previous seven sets of falls and have led to the magnificent gorge system that visitors see today.

Lake Kariba

by MikeAtSea

Lake Kariba is the result of a massive damming project undertaken in 1958 to flood an area of the Zambezi Valley in order to create a hydroelectric power plant for Zimbabwe and Zambia. Many hundreds of local people were displaced in order to flood the valley, and many animals were relocated in the months before the floodgates finally opened. The lake is 282km long, and the dam is 24m thick at its base. The Lake itself is a popular destination for fishing, boating, game watching and relaxing. Many visitors take a house boat with a crew and drift off to explore the many secluded inlets and islands which are home to a good variety of animal and bird life, as well as 42 species of fish. The fishing is excellent with opportunity to catch tiger fish, bream, carp and black bass. Many hippos make the lake their home, as well as crocodiles, and the Matusodona National Park, Chete and Charara...
