Kafue National Park

by MikeAtSea

Approximately 200km west of Lusaka, Kafue National Park is one of the largest and wildest protected areas in the world. Covering more than 22,000 square kilometers, Kafue was originally established as a protected area in 1950.The astounding variety of ecosystems within this area include lush, riverine forest along the banks of the Kafue River and its main tributaries, open mixed woodland of mature teak and miombo trees, grassy plains and the seasonally flooded Busanga Swamps in the north of the Park which alone covers 750 square kilometers! The Itezhi-Tezhi Dam in the south of the Park covers 370 square kilometers and is more of an inland seas than a dam, providing habitat for the African fish eagle and numerous heron species among many others. In addition to the more commonly sighted African species such as lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, hippo and hyena, Kafue is home to...

The Luangwa Valley

by MikeAtSea

Another one of Africa's prime wildlife sanctuaries, the Luangwa Valley lies at the tail end of the Great Rift Valley, the continental fault that runs through the Red Sea and south down the length of East Africa. This tectonic movement was responsible for the formation of lakes such as Tanganika and Lake Albert, the Rift Valley split as it reached Zambia, one arm forming Lake Malawi and the other becoming the Luangwa Valley which is 700km long and an average of 100km wide.In the west of the valley, the Muchinga Mountain Range forms the natural boundary of the Park. The Luangwa River meanders down the centre of the Valley, forming oxbow lakes along its course. Thick, lush vegetation characterizes this area. The North and South Luangwa National Parks divide the Valley in two, with the smaller and less well known Luambe Park placed between the two. Wildlife protection began in this area in...

Livingstone

by Pieter11

The most southwestern city of Zambia is Livingstone. The city’s name and existence are closely related to the famous British traveler and missionary who was the first European who explored this part of Africa, and during these travels he was also the first to discover the Victoria Falls. When in 1904 the Victoria Falls Bridge was built between former North- and South-Rhodesia, the city was built and named after this pioneer. Between 1911 and 1935 Livingstone was the capital of North-Rhodesia. Today it is one of the largest cities in the country with about 100.000 inhabitants. The city of Livingstone is the centre of tourism in the area. At the International Airport of Livingstone, lots of tourists land for their stay at the banks of the Zambezi River and of course at the Victoria Falls, that are situated only 10 kilometers outside the city. Most of these tourism activities though, are...

Canoeing on the Zambezi River

by Rusket

We spent three days and two nights on the river, getting as close to wildlife as never before. This was the only time I was disappointed by our local guide. Beeing the youngest in the group, my son was placed with him in the canoe, and in front and in the leading canoe. We were told that most of the job was done by the one sitting behind. But he did not do anything, the canoe slowed the others down and they started muttering about the lazy child. After a break I volountered to change with my son, and I had the same experience as he: The guide did nothing, I had to do all the work, it was really hard. And the others muttered again, this time about this weak, lazy, old women in the leading canoe. I then told Warren, Drifters' guide, that he should put one of the strong, young men in the front canoe, since it seemed like the local guide was sick or weekened (I did nor use the word lazy!)...

Livingstone

Named after the Scottish missionary Dr David Livingstone who discovered the area and named the nearby falls in 1855 Livingstone is funnily enough the lesser known town by the falls which Livingstone Explored. Most people visit Victoria Falls accross the border in Zimbabwe, but forget this side, which has a whole lot more culture, history and some fantastic things to see like the falls from the Zambian size, Microliting, booze cruises, Rhino Walks and the Livingstone Museum as well as some great Markets. I really liked Livingstone as it was more Africa, less touristy and a great place to see the falls without the upmarket quality that Victoria Falls seems to have.See my Livingstone pages for more photos.

Microliting Over Victoria Falls

by Zanzibargirl

This is the best way to see the falls without a doubt. From the sky. Microliting the falls can be done from the Zambia with Batoka Sky adventures. A spectacular view and a bit of a rush as you fly in a small fixed wing air craft with nothing to protect you from the elements - the air is all around you. Simply the best way to see the falls. Very COOL!See my Livingstone pages for more photos.

Rhino Walk - Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park

by Zanzibargirl

See my travelogue for some more photos. This was incredible. I got less than a Metre away from some of the most amazingly rare Rhino's. One even came right up to a branch to scratch his tusk as we stood just behind the branch. INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!!!Mosi - Oa - Tunya National Park stretches 66 sq km and is home to a few introduced white rhino which you can do a walking tour safari with. The guides are incredibly insightful on the animals behavious and it is a rare experience to get so up close and personal with the Rhino's as well as other animals. We wandered amoungst baby giraffe, impala and Antelope plus Zebra. But of course you cant beat the experience of meeting a Rhino face on for a photo op like this one!!!!See my Livingstone pages for more photos.

The Forgotten Side of the Falls

by Zanzibargirl

Most people when they think of Victoria Falls think of the town with the same name located in Zimbabwe, but the falls can be viewed just as spectacularly from Zambia. There is great viewing to be seen on this side of the falls of the mass of water or Mosi Ou Tunya as it is also known gushing in one of Natures amazing wonders of the world. A must see highlight. I have seen Niagara, but this is just soooo much better. Trust me on that.See my Livingstone pages for more photos.

South Luangwa National Park

by Zanzibargirl

South Luangwa National Park is probably the number one place I would recommend visiting if you are intending on going to Zambia. It is one of the only game parks remaining in the whole of Africa which has Night game drives. Here in Luangwe I watched the Lion prowl under spotlight and stunning sunset vista's. If you are lucky, this is one of the best places to spot a Leopard. I was unlucky, but some of our group did see them. Nearby also at Flatdogs campsite there is great Chalets, camping in the tree's and more of those glorious sunsets. If you can handle a long dirt road to get there, it is well worth the visit!South Luangwa National Park is one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. So remote and isolated it has a high density of wildlife and offers and experience that so many of the other African game and national parks seem to offer. It is less visited and known, and...
