Elephant Encounter

by scieyence

This was a unique experience, although quite "touristy". We boarded elephants by climbing a flight of stairs to the saddle and rode slowly for an hour. There is a chance to see wildlife but we didn't see much. The best part was afterward when we got to feed and pet the beasts that gave us a ride. I love elephants and enjoyed getting to know "Marula" just a little bit.

Mosi O Tunya National Park

by stevezero

We also took a small safari to the Mosi O Tunya National Park, near to the victoria Falls.here you can see the rare White Rhino . They are not white in colour, the name comes from the Dutch word "wijd" meaning wide.

Bartering

by stevezero

When not drinking beer, the men of the village make some natty wood carvings, mostly of animals which you can purchase.Bartering skills come in handy, and almost anything can be traded for their goods.

Victoria Falls Craft Village

by stevezero

Near the Mosi o tunya hotel where we stayed is the Victoria Falls Craft Village. This is a good place to buy your African craft items, however the vendors can be a bit pushy.Bartering is the name of the game and it is also possible to part excahnge T shirts, electrical goods, footware or any other article that is in short supply in Zambia

Victoria Falls Chasm

by stevezero

The waters of Victoria Falls do not drop into an open basin but rather into a chasm that varies in width from 80 to 240 feet (25 to 75 metres). This chasm is formed by the precipice of the falls and by an opposite rock wall of equal height. The chasm's only outlet is a narrow channel, and through this gorge, which is less than 210 feet (65 metres) wide and 390 feet (120 metres) long, flows the entire volume of the Zambezi River. At the gorge's end is the Boiling Pot, a deep pool into which the waters churn and foam at flood time. Just below the Boiling Pot, the gorge is spanned by the Victoria Falls (Zambezi) Bridge, which carries rail, automobile, and pedestrian traffic between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

David Livingstone Statue

by stevezero

The British explorer David Livingstone was the first European to see the falls (Nov. 16, 1855). He named them after Queen Victoria. A statue of Livingatone can be seen on the Zimbabwe side of the falls.

Victoria Falls Bridge

by stevezero

The Victoria Falls Bridge was commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1900, although he never visited the falls and died before construction began, he expressed his wish that the "railway should cross the Zambezi just below the Victoria Falls. I should like to have the spray of the falls over the carriages." The bridge carries rail, automobile, and pedestrian traffic between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is possible to wlak over the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe quite easily these days with little formalities.

More On The Falls

by stevezero

At the falls, the river plunges over a sheer precipice to a maximum drop of 355 feet (108 metres). The falls' mean flow is almost 33,000 cubic feet (935 cubic metres) per second. The Zambezi River does not gather speed as it nears the drop, the approach being signaled only by the mighty roar and characteristic veil of mist for which the Kalolo-Lozi people named the falls Mosi-o-Tunya ("The Smoke That Thunders").

Victoria Falls

by stevezero

The Victoria falls is a spectacular waterfall located about midway along the course of the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia to the north and Zimbabwe to the south. Approximately twice as wide and twice as deep as the Niagara Falls the waterfall spans the entire breadth of the Zambezi River at one of its widest points (more than 5,500 feet [1,700 metres])

Kariba Safari

by stevezero

From Kariba we also took an early morning safari to see some of the local wildlife. This involved a very early start and it was wonderful to see the sun come up over the open plains. We had our own private transport with a driver/guide which proved to be quite reasonably priced.
