Cruise on Lake Kariba

by stevezero

The construction of the Kariba Dam, created a huge artificial lake behind it. It is possible to get a cruise on the lake, which forms part of the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. We chose a cruise in the evening, which involved the sunse over the lake. We also saw plenty of birds and lots of hippos. It is eerie to see the remains of the dead trees which still protrude above the surface of the lake.

More on the Kariba Dam

by stevezero

Some Africans initially opposed construction of the dam, seeing it as a symbol of the unpopular Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which dissolved into Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Zambia in 1963. Later, however, the dam was accepted because of the inexpensive electric power it furnishes to Zambia's prosperous copper industry.

The Kariba Dam

by stevezero

The concrete arch dam across the Zambezi River at Kariba Gorge, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe was completed in 1959, the structure is 420 feet (128 m) high with a crest 1,899 feet (579 m) in length and a volume of 1,032,000 cubic m. The dam creates Lake Kariba, and it supplies some 6,700,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, generated by Kariba North Bank and South Bank companies (Zambia and Zimbabwe, respectively). Its creation required the resettlement of more than 30,000 Batonka tribespeople of Zambia and the evacuation of thousands of wild animals ("Operation Noah").

Mosi-O-Tunya Game Park

by joits

As much fun as it is to go to the zoo, I kind of feel a little guilty seeing animals caged up and not in their natural environment. So I have to say that going on a Safari and seeing them in their natural habitat was really refreshing. And you get to see things at your own pace. You drive into the park in your own car and follow the trail and see a whole variety of game. As long as you stay in your car, you are perfectly safe and you will have a good time!

Victoria Falls

we have seen the Falls from both sides, and both are just as spectacular. on this occation the Zambezi river was low due to drought, and the rock formation behind the falls exposed, this presented an opportunity for a rare vison.

Victoria Falls

by tini58de

The Victoria Falls are one of the most spectacular sights in this part of Africa. They can be viewed from both the Zimbabwian side as well as from the Zambian side. There is a bridge right across the Zambesi, which will lead you to the border between these two countries.

Feel the freedom

by skatzcatz

A must see activity while your in the Victoria Falls vicinity is a microlite flight over the falls and Zambezi river. For 15 minutes you soar above the river and falls like an eagle hearing the roar and feeling the spray. This flight left me breathless amd for someone who was pesimistic at first i've now become a convert as to this being a great way to see natural wonders like Victoria Falls.A wing mounted camera can also be loaded with film, as yet i havn't had mine developed. Taking your own camera is forbidden for obvious reasons.

The mighty Vic Falls!!! A Smoking River!!!

by aadil

The mighty Victoria Falls are a pleasure to see for the beauty and force with which it enthralls you to keep looking at it endlessly!! You just don't feel like moving away from there!! The Zambezi river is the source and the lifeline of Zambia and Zimbabwe as the tourism trade also thrives on it.

The Victoria Water Falls, in...

by dutch_anna

The Victoria Water Falls, in the south of Zambia, on the border with Zimbabwe.A path along the edge with view points. It is a beautiful walk in the shadow of trees, with various views on the falls. On the view point a thin mist of water can make you real wet, but it is nice and cool when it is hot weather.
