Car Hire in Zambia

by aadil

Car hire is available in most places and pretty cheap too but be careful when you negotiate with the company about actual payments and what you are eligible for and what you have to pay the driver if at all and whether you are supposed to pay for the fuel (gas) too or if it is included in the price of the rental!!! Makes things much easier and lesser hassles when you are away from the company you hired the car from!!! HAHAHA!!! Major car rental/hire firms like Hertz and Avis are always there as well as private firms too but make sure you get all the details finalised in print to be on the safer side!!!

FLY

by dutch_anna

Flying around in Zambia: small airplanes like Czessna and Piper Cherokee can land on small strips. You cannot take much luggage with you, though, and use soft bags, no hard shell suit cases. Even when you stay in a luxury lodge, clothing is casual.

British Airways from London or...

by Conor_P

British Airways from London or KLM from Amsterdam. I think that Kenyan Airways also does a flight from London, via Nairobi, but the price is almost the same.If you know Africa well, then driving is not a bad idea, otherwise it is probably best to take busses and planes. Flights go out of Lusaka to Kitwe, Ndola and Livingstone at least twice a day. They cost between US $180 and $240 return. The bus is much cheaper but is a lot less reliable and much less comfortable.See - http://www.zambianairways.com

Mini Buses and local buses...

by MayBarker

Mini Buses and local buses have to be the way. The roads are full of pot holes, so wouldn't recommend driving yourself. Also there seems to be a little problem with bandits, and the buses put on plain clothes security guards with machine guns - which adds to the feeling of security or fear - whatever state you are in!Definitely mini buses and the local buses

TAZARA from Dar to Kapiri...

TAZARA from Dar to Kapiri Mposhi was quite nice. Shared a compartment with 5 Ugandan gospel singers. My friend's backpack was stolen from our compartment while we slept, though. Don't forget to lock the door!

Air:        British Airways, Virgin Airways, and KLM will all get you on the southern half of the continent. The former two will come through Johannesburg and Harare, usually. KLM will usually come through Nairobe. Roan Air, a small Irish Air carrier with offices in Lusaka can be chartered (and sometimes have regular flights) to all Points Zambian.Click on the 'Lusaka' link under my list of visited locations for transportation tips within the capital city.Between Lusaka and Livingstone:        From the 'intercity terminal' in Lusaka, there are buses that travel daily to Livingstone, loading at 5:00 or 5:30 a.m., and arriving in the early to mid-afternoon. The cost is less than $10 USD. And it's the fastest non-air vehicle.Between Lusaka and Livingstone, by rail:        There is a nice alternative to the bus, and that is an overnight train to the Falls. It departs Friday night and arrives...

Zambia is serviced by number...

by ngaka

Zambia is serviced by number of major airlines, including British Airways and South African Airways. International airports consist of Lusaka, Livingstone and Ndola. A number of intercountry buses connect Lusaka to regional centres, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania. The quality does range from Greyhound (luxury) to reglaur local buses. Buses and hitching to the remoter parts of the country are the main ways to get around Zambia. Reliability and quality varies between buses. Some are quite good and run on fixed schedules, other leave whenever full and can take virtually forever to get to the destination. Major bus companies include (popular routes listed):CR holdings - Lusaka - Livingstone & Lusaka - ChipataRPS Bus Services - Lusaka - MpulunguWhite Horse - Lusaka - CopperbeltAll these companies have there own booking office and location where the bus leaves from....

The towns along the road

by georeiser

The road from Livingstone to Lusaka pass through some towns on the way. Choma and Monze are the largest towns. The express bus makes only one stop on the 470 km trip.
