You must absolutly go to...

by fisheagle

You must absolutly go to victoria falls and experience all the activities. The best all round company to go to is Shearwater. They will cater to your every need and are the most friendly people. Kariba dam is a must too, as is mana pools. Actually all the stops on the zambezi river are a must. Other places of interest are great zimbabwe, bulawayo, lion and cheeta park, nyanga if you are into mountains and do not forget the chinoyi caves. my fondest memory of victoria falls is the afternoon sundowners at Safari lodge, one of the best five star hotels in Africa. The sunset at Safari lodge is to die for. Nothing in the whole world will beat these sunsets. They have a watering hole teaming with wildlife, from elephants to lions...

The National Museum in Bulawayo is definitely worth seeing. There is a great exhibit on CecilRhodes. There’s also a wonderful insect collection, the largest stuffed elephant in the world, awell-done exhibit on evolution, and interesting displays on local cultures and history.

Imbri's General Tip

by Imbri

Wandering through the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, near Masvingo, wondering what kind of peopleonce lived there. I could almost hear their echoes between the stone walls. The stone that wasn’twarmed by the sun was cold to the touch, providing a cool haven in the corridors. It was old andbeautiful and mysterious. The Ruins were built by the Shona over 500 years ago. Theirfascinating history includes an attempt by colonial officials in the late 1800s to credit the Ruins toanyone but the local “savages”.

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE FALLSThe...

by SirRichard

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE FALLSThe native name of the falls is Mosi-oa-Tunya - The Smoke that Thunders, derived from the towering column of spray when the Zambezi River runs high. The name is probably more appropriate and descriptive than 'Victoria', which has a far too calm and composed ring to it to do justice to the masses of thundering, swirling water of these spectacular Falls. But all Dr David Livingstone probably thought of when he named the Falls after his Queen in 1855 was his royal duty.Five separate falls make up this incredible spectacle that plunges more than 100m into a sheer-sided chasm which separates Zimbabwe from Zambia. The awe-inspiring abyss is spanned by a 1905 Edwardian bridge which links the two countries. The masses of water plunging down the Falls and into the gorge below originate from the mighty Zambezi River that meanders through more than 2,700km of African...

MATOPOS NATIONAL PARKAbout...

MATOPOS NATIONAL PARKAbout one hour south of Bulawayo by road, are the stunning Matopos Hills. Regarded as one of Zimbabwe's major tourist attractions, these famous rocky outcrops extend across 2000 square kilometers of countryside. The massive granite boulders and gigantic rock formations are more than 3,000 million years old, creating an ancient, brooding landscape. A focal point is Rhodes Grave (see photo) on the summit of the Hill of Benevolent Spirits. The entire area has great cultural and religious significance for the African people, but Mr. Rhodes considered that his own grave was more important than centuries of religious traditions; since then, locals don't use to come here as often. There are hundreds of caves, many of which were home to early man, and rock painting bears testimony to the value of wildlife to the artists. There are sign posted and directions and maps are...

GREAT ZIMBABWE RUINSTo get to...

GREAT ZIMBABWE RUINSTo get to this amazing ruins, I took a local bus from Masvingo that stopped 1 km away from the ruins.Once there, admire the Great Enclosure, but avoid the 'touristic' village, a tourist trap. Don't miss the little museum, where you can see the stone birds that appear in bank notes, flag...This are the ruins of the capital of the great Monomotapa Empire, which reached its climax from 1000AD to 1400AD. The Great Enclosure, (see photo), is the largest ancient structure in southern Africa. It is almost 100 meters across and 255 meters in circumference. The walls are 11 meters high in places and up to 5 meters thick. The prevailing theory is that this structure was used as a royal compound. Unfortunately, treasure hunters removed most artifacts that would confirm this theory.

visit Victoria Falls National Park. One of my fondest memories of Zimbabwe was looking at the night sky. We saw a shooting star our first night and could gaze at the heavens for hours...if we weren't looking toward the watering hole for animals.

by Road_runner

take a flight by plane or helicopter over the Victoria Falls. Many people visit Zimbabwe for the Falls alone (and for rafting on the lower Zambezi river).Of course, don't miss the National Wildlife parks as the Hwange National Park for instance. Also a boat trip on Lake Kariba is great. was a dinner at night in the busch. Great experience, but if you do this, be sure to get some advice about where to go and with whom. At night many wild animals are wandering around, especially around drinking pits. There are still lion families, but these are mainly inside the national parks. However, fences are very often damaged and it is very common to see some animals breaking out. In the pond of the hotel for instance we found a croco and even the local guys stayed away from the pond where the croco was taking a nap. So as allways, let's do what the locals do.

by jaec

My canoe trip on the Zambezi was the highlight of my visit to Zimbabwe. Ensure you take one on the Zimbabwe side as the Zambian side is more inhabited and game is scarcer. Seeing elephants, hippos and large herds of buffalo on the shore as you lazily paddle by or just let the current take you past. Incredible sunsets on the river!

by egarchi

Visit Victoria Falls. Apart from the Falls themselves, something is provided for everybody by way of entertainment, experience or excitement - wild animals, wild sports (white-water rafting, bungee-jumping, canoeing), wild dancing, very civilised accommodation, food & drink. Far horizons, wonderfull sunsets, nicest people.
