We decided to go to Chiredzi...

by anaiis

We decided to go to Chiredzi on the south of Zimbabwe. Definitely off the beaten path for two girls without a car. We found a hotel there - one with four or five stars and one cheaper. Although the first one was still affordable to us, we decided NOT to take it. It just wasnt Zimbabwe we wanted to experience. Chiredzi is malaria area so you must take your prophilactic drugs. We decided to rent a (normal) car and to go to Gonarezhou National Park. We wanted to arrange our own safari. And we made it. We just ask the drivers (taxi?) on the street, if anyone was willing to go with us with this price (I think it was 15 USD). A man decided to go, but he has told us, he must go home before and if we are willing to wait for him in a car. We soon learned that he went home to change his clothes from T-shirt and shorts to a real suit! It didnt seem like a good idea on a safari, but I didnt made any...

Seeing real rural life in...

by anaiis

Seeing real rural life in Zimbabwe is not that easy. There are many cultural shows in best luxury hotels, but this is not it. I am not sure if I can recommend you to experience some rural life now, since the political situation is more uncertain. But Zimbabweans I met there were extremely nice, very modest and respectful (almost too respectful, that means they dont approach to you on less than 2m). Unfortunately, I also saw some racism there. And as a white female I was often treated differently from the local people, not as equal, which bothered me a lot. But I wasnt angry, just sad.

5 O'CLOCK TEAMy last day in Vic Falls I spent the afternoon in the gardens of the marvellous colonial Victoria Falls Hotel (just by the Railway Station). The 5 o'clock tea is a real institution there (British heritage!) and is a great experience. By the way, I didn´t have dinner that day!!

Ask a tour operator if they offer a visit to a local village. We visited some local villagers, who were happy to show us around their homes. We were taken to the local well to see how far they traveled for water. We also visited a school were the local children were very excited to receive our small gifts of pens and candy. Our own children gained a better understanding of the hardships others face. I highly recommend a visit like this.

by travelmad478

This little guy was right ON the path--I almost stepped on him as we were returning from a hike to our campsite next to the Zambezi River. I don't think I've ever run across a chameleon before, and I've certainly never gotten a close-up shot of one.

by LAOWAI

The most interesting thing I saw in the Vumba (Eastern Zim near the Mozzy border) was this clothing camp. Donated clothes from around the world weren't for free. NOPE- they sell them in huge boat crates which are then sold in smaller pack to markets like this one in the photo where the clothes are again sold- but onepiece at a time.

THE HIGH POINT OF ZIMBABWE IS...

by marko727

THE HIGH POINT OF ZIMBABWE IS MT. INYANGANI, AT 8514 FEET (2595 METERS). IT IS LOCATED NEAR THE BORDER WITH MOZAMBIQUE, SOUTHEAST OF HARARE. HERE IS A VIEW OF THE CLIMB BY A YOUNG ADULT, TAKEN FROM THE WEB: Mt Inyangani is a lot smaller than many of the Drakensberg peaks but still is the highest mountain in Zimbabwe. An experienced mountain climber takes an hour and a half to do the trip to the peak and back to the car park. We are not and, therefore, took three and a half hours. You have to be careful on the mountain. We were told that climbers have lost their lives in the marshy ground (or 'quicksand' as the Zimbabwe National Parks insist on calling it) and climbers have lost their way when the clouds close in and have died of exposure. For this reason we walked to strict compass bearings calculated on a 1:63,360 contour map.

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage...

by jaec

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage is a great place to visit if you are in Bulawayo. It is only about 24 km out of town. This is a centre originally built to rear orphaned and injured animals especially victims of poachers. It has grown to be a breeding centre as well.Check out Chipangali for opening times, admission etc.

We went to Livingstone, Zambia, just to say we were there. It is about 20 km from the Vic Falls. Our taxi(?) had to be pushed to get started but we got there. Make sure that you agree on the price of the taxi fare before you leave. We passed the motorcade of the Zambian president on his way to lunch at one of the hotels on the Zambian side of the Falls. Livingstone is unfortunately not a tourist town, so do not feel bad if you do not see it.

by InfiKnight

While I don't know how popular it is in terms of foreknowledge, Great Zimbabwe was some of the greatest ruins I have ever seen (the Pyramids of Egypt even paled beside them, though when I was last there I didn't visit the Temple of Karnak.) for there is a certain majesty, a sense of the mystic, the unseen that is missing from the Pyramids. A truly magical and entoxicating time.
