Victoria Falls

by Zanzibargirl

Victoria Falls is the rather touristy town named after the Falls that provide the name for the town. Located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe Victoria Falls is heavily influenced by the tourist who come to see the falls and hence is more affluent than some of the rest of the country. The Falls themselves are of course the highlight. Also known as Mosi - oa - Tunya or the Smoke that thunders the Falls are a must see as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. See my Victorial Falls pages for more photos.

Victoria Falls, Natural Wonder of the World

by Waxbag

Victoria Falls is one of the most amazing sites in Africa if not the world. The falls drop in a nearly perfect line 1.7km (1 mile). The cascades fall between 90 m and 110 m (300-350ft) with an average volume of 10,000 cubic meters per second. During the March to May floods the volume is dramatically increased to 83,000 cubic meters per second. The mist that comes off the falls is so much it is nearly impossible to see anything. This is bad for camera toting tourist but it great for the surrounding floral that is incredible lush from the persistent spray. Walking above the falls along the Zambezi River is a wild experience. You may see warthogs, buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, monkeys, as well as lion (although very rare). For more information see:Victoria Falls National Park

The Great Zimbabwe

by Waxbag

The Great Zimbabwe is sub-Saharan Africa’s greatest ancient monument. It was the seat of a wealthy and advanced people called the Shona who greatly influenced an enormous area around them. There were an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people who lived here. The most interesting part of the structure are the huge mortarless walls that stand 11 m (35 feet) high and are up to 5 m (33 feet) thick and the large conical structure inside the walls that was thought to either store grain or was a ceremonial structure. For an unknown reason the entire city was abandoned in the14 th or 15th century possibly due to over consumption of local natural resources. The site is full of interesting plants such as the candelabra tree and may have some vervet monkeys climbing around. You can see everything from the fortress on the hill and the walls of the Great Zimbabwe all in half of a day. Camping is available...

Matobo Hills National Park

by Waxbag

Matobo National Park has many interesting things to see. Firstly, it has one of the most unusual landscapes in the world. The granite domes that have been pushed up and eroded leave bizarre, Dr. Sues rock formations. The horizon appears to be like a city landscape with sky scrapers. At a closer inspection of these strange formations it would appear that the balancing boulders are at any moment ready to fall.Secondly, it the final resting place of Cecil Rhodes, one of the founding fathers of Zimbabwe for good or bad. His grave is situated on top of the “View of the World” at Malindidzimu among a ring of gigantic boulders. The view is amazing!Thirdly, the Matobo hills are a treasure trove of ancient African rock art. With some great trails through the granite hills, the rock art if very accessible and are some of the best in Africa.Fourthly, the fauna here is quite spectacular. There is a...

Mana Pools

by Waxbag

Mana Pools is one of the wildest places in all of Africa. It is very difficult to get here without your own vehicle and there are no facilities within a three hour drive out of the park except bathrooms and showers. This is the only park in all of Africa that has large game including preditors, where you can get out of your car and walk around without an armed ranger. There is a staggering amount of large game here including herds of buffalow, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, water buck and eland as well as plenty of elephant and huge numbers of hippo and crocodile in all the pools and river. The bird life is also profuse. I couldn't believe how many owl I spotted in one park. The Zambezi river is beautiful here. The sunsets are just amazing. You really feel like you have left the modern world behind in Mana Pools.

Hwange National Park

by Waxbag

Zimbabwe’s Premier Game Park is Hwange National Park. It is known as Africa’s elephant park. There are around 20,000 elephant in this park. It is evident through the unbelievable destruction of these giants. Somehow, the park is able to handle them (actually it's not). There are many good pans and water holes to see large herds of herbivores as well as predators. Lion and hyena are definitely prevalent here. At the time there were also several white rhinos that were watch very closely by the rangers. Hopefully, they are still there.Hwange is accesible from Vic Falls on a tarred road just south.

Victoria Falls

by tini58de

The Victoria Falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and used to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World in ancient times!About 1000 km away from its source, the waters of the Zambesi fall down more than 100 m deep and 1700 m wide! What a fabulous sight!! One of the best ways to see the Victoria Falls is on a flight over the Falls and gorges. What is interesting is the fact, that there are some very rare specimen of plants and animals to be found in this area: the fern Helianthus farinosa is only found here and in two other locations in Zambia, but nowhere else in the whole world! Also the Taita Falcon and Black Eagle, two very rare specimen, breed in the gorges. There are many game viewing opportunities in the area as well as a wide variety of activities.
