Take a walk along Victoria Falls

The entrance fee to the Falls from the Zimbabwean side is 30 US dollars (July 2010). You can stay in the park all day long, but a walk along the Falls takes about two hours. You don't need a guide for the trip, unless you want to find out more about the rainforest which is picturesque, but without doubt it's not what most people are here for.
Before entering the park, you should rent a raincoat to protect you from the permanent spray. On the first afternoon we didn't do that, and got only half-way through. It was rather our cameras that we were worried about, not ourselves, and on the second day we decided to come back in the morning wrapped in long raincoats.
A well-marked trail leads to 16 view points - the first one being the David Livingstone Statue and the last the railway bridge.

When to visit

If you want to have the best view of the waterfall (and this is what most tourists come for), it is a good idea to visit from July to September. It is a transition phase from the overflow to a low flow state. Before that time, during the flooding state (February to May), the mist can obscure the view, so no matter how impressive the Falls are, you may not be able to perceive it. The end of dry season (October and November) means that the Falls are not as spectacular as you could expect at other times. Besides, the temperatures then are very high. On the other hand, if you need the adrenaline rush, you should opt for the low water level (August to December), as this is when whitewater rafting and swimming in the Devil's Pool are possible.

DO IT YOURSELF Tour of Victoria Falls (The Falls)

My wife an I were on a short trip here and we did not rent a car since people made it sound too dangerous and too expensive--we paid for a guided tour (MISTAKE). I felt comfortable in Victoria Falls. The FALLs themselves are amazing and you get nothing new from the guide that can't be read in the interpretive center.

The path is approximately 4 KMs that almost loops around and is part of the falls park. We passed within a few feet of an impala. The guide did not want to get wet so he stood on the main path while he pointed us to the various view points that were areas to get soaked. We were there during extremely high water on February 20th and whitewater rafting and jet boating were cancelled it was so rough. IT may not be as bad during other times of the year.

We followed the advice of others to use a clear gallon zip lock for the camera to shield from the spray instead of buying an expensive waterproof camera housing. Ours is a 3 MP camera not some high end camera with a telephoto lens.

We did not rent ponchos or umbrellas but both are available in the Victoria Falls parking lot from vendors. We just changed our clothes after the tour at our lodge. The only nice thing about the tour is that our lodge only had an hourly shuttle, so this allowed us to get to and from the falls on our time schedule and not the schedule of the shuttle. The tour was about $25 US each including entrance fee to the park and transportation to and from our lodge, but I would rent a car if I did it again.

Our guide said that 1200 people used to visit the falls each day and now a fraction of that amount visit--we saw maybe 25 other people in the park when we were there.

Take a ride on the river.

And see the sunset. The best thing about this is...free alcohol! I mean...the sunset of course. It's all about the sunset. In order to view the sunset on the Zambezi River you are taken out on a boat and driven around to see whatever you may see. Along the way appetizers are served and you can drink as much as you want. It's the best way to relax after a long day, or just for the heck of it. The cost is usually around $30 or so. Although, if you sign up for two activities, you should be able to get this one for free through your hotel or tour agent.

The Harsh Walk Down

And see the falls too. This is about as close as you can get to the falls...and as intimate as is possible. You are taken up to as close to the bottom of the falls as possible and in the process you get completely soaked!!!!

Be aware though that this is not for the physically unfit. You have to go up and down an extremely steep set of stairs to and from the river which will drain you of any energy you have and might put you in pain for some time if you are too out of shape.

Class 5 rapids!
RblWthACoz profile photo
RblWthACoz 650 reviews

The Zambezi River is a class 5 rapids for white water rafting and generally considered one of the top 10 places to raft! It is no joke. I watched a video in my hotel of people riding the rapids and a lot of the people were continually getting tossed out of their boat. The only problem is that during the season from January to July, the rapids are prone to closure or partial closure because the water levels are too high.

White Water Rafting on the Zambezi

Do you want some water with that?

Most exciting and most terrifying thing I have ever experienced. 24 rapids of thrills - and spills - covering 30 kms, up to grade 5. Following a debriefing and kitting out with a lifejacket and helmet we set off down into the gorge. There's 6 to a raft plus an experienced guy who reads the rapids but spends the whole day winding you up. We flipped the raft twice and I was grateful for the kyaker who pulled me out the first time, rapid 7, where, we were told later, that people had died last year.Everyone walk s round rapid 9 or Commercial Suicide as it is known,as it's a grade 6, but our chappie took the raft through on his own. Brave/foolish? As the waters calm down and take a break you have time to notice the crocodiles which bask on the rocks and banks of the river. They may only be small but, when your heart is pounding, common sense does not prevail. At the end of the day the way out of the gorge is via a vertical ladder made out of branches nailed together. I felt it prudent to splash the cash and booked a helicopter to come and collect me. It swished me back along the Bakota gorge James Bond style, swooped me over the elephants in Mosi-Oa-Tunya national park before circling low over the falls to get the most fantastic views. It wasn't the cheapest day I've ever had but it was definitely one of the best.

last time i travel in a river by boat was in Budapest alongside the river are many beautiful buildings and palaces
this time is in the forth longest river of Africa the landscape is totally different instead of the menmade beauty i saw a lot of wild animals both sides of the river it's a brand new experience for me as an island-born person
besides the animals tourists can see the beauty of the sunset with its reflection on the river but you must notice one thing it will be cold soon right after the disappearence of the sun

The local name of the falls "Mosi-oa-Toenja" means "the smoke that thunders' and refers to the white clouds of spray that rise up to 500 m. from the abyss where the waters fall.
Though we were there at the end of May, and the time when the water volume normally is the highest , in the Zambezi River , is in February or March, there was a curtain of water that created a cloud that prevented us almost see the waterfall and it was like a shower at the time that went into it.
Before entering the waterfalls park , you rent a raincoat for $ 3, you get the entry tickets for 30 USD, protect your camera and you are ready to go to visit the statue of Livingstone and from there make the impressive tour of nearly two Kms. viewing the falls , surrounded by tropical forest and if you're lucky watching wild animals
On the opposite side is Zambia and from there you can also view of the falls.
When the moon is full, you can visit the falls at night and this should be a good experienci
We "have" to go back to better see the waterfalls

Buitres / Vultures

If you are near the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge do not miss the vultures feed that they make at 1 oclock .
You go down in direction to the lake and there they feed the vultures . You see how they know what is happening as half an hour earlier they start to come near , you may see them in the trees , in the floor ... , but when they see the man with their food they all ( I should say in hundreds ) come to fight for the bones with a big noise and removing a lot of dust
You may see Marabús and different tipes of vultures
