Be careful of the exchange rates.

by RblWthACoz

Do NOT exchange your money anywhere the government has set up. The best place for you to change money is on the black market. If you aren't getting $100,000 Zim for $1 US, you are getting ripped off. The charge for a half hour of parking at the airport was $350,000 Zim. Of course...you have to find the black market to exchange your money...

Patience required when entering

by Rusket

Be prepared to wait a long time in line when entering Zimbabwe! Be sure you have your visas if required, and some cash (US dollars work well). And btw: When they charge you something in dollars, be aware that their own currency is called dollar, too! Don't make the mistake of paying them in US dollars!!!

Beware of crowds of people!

by TracyG

Particularly in markets people will crowd around you wanting you to buy things, whilst someone else slips there hand in you pocket. Be gracious but firm, and tell them to go away before they actually swarm you.

Care at ATM's!

by TracyG

Be very careful when leaving an ATM machine, especially in Vic Falls and Harare, I have heard of people being mugged as they have just left. Also I have heard from locals, that the area near the Railway line in Vic. Falls is particularly dangerous to wander round on your own after dark, so it is best to go in a group, particularly if it is very late.

Risks in Traveling to Zimbabwe

by roxy-surfer-gurl

Zimbabwe continues to be in the midst of political, economic and humanitarian crises with serious implications for the security situation in the country. All U.S. citizens in Zimbabwe are urged to take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their well-being. The Zimbabwean economy is in precipitous decline, with extremely high rates of unemployment and inflation. The economic crisis has led to a serious increase in crime. Zimbabwe is still experiencing spot fuel shortages that can hinder in-country travel. Zimbabwe’s food shortages are expected to continue, although, it is difficult to assess the severity of the situation given government secrecy surrounding agricultural production. The humanitarian crisis is expected to worsen in coming months and may lead to possible large-scale migration of Zimbabweans to urban or border areas, with further disruption and an increase in crime...

I guess Zim is pretty...

by LizSitka

I guess Zim is pretty dangerous these days (2003) but if they do get the land ownership sorted out the only danger I'd make clear is the bus station in Harare at night. Even during the day youll want to keep your hand on your wallet - the totsis (thieves) are very clever. The crafts available at the bus station are varied and reasonably priced, though.

Zambezi, CROCS & HIPPOS

by safardreams

This was a nice part of the SAFARI. But, at times it did get a little crazy. Hippos can tip or split this thing in TWO! CROCS can also tip it over. Your guide will know where to keep the canoe going. Just listen to him and pay attention. It's very important you do that.Like I said before, this can get boring, but also risky!!10/1999

Beggers and money

by Alain_Smeets

At Matopos, Zimbabwe, on the top of this rock formation at the grave of Cecil Rhodes, there was a group of schoolchildren. A young couple was laying below a very big rock. (The grave there, is surrounded with big rocks.) The guy spook to me, said hello. I answered and said also hello. Then he asked me to give him something. I did if I didn’t understand him and he asked again to give him something for his girlfriend here.A strange world we are living in. Every were you run or go, there is always someone asking for money. We also saw that in Cape Town. We were walking there and we see an father pushing his son towards us. He walked next to Thieu for almost a kilometer. But we tried to ignore him. Because when you give him something, they have to give it to their father and he drinks it up. Jacques told us the same story and we saw it also with our own eyes.In Victoria Falls there are some...
