by Gypsy_Saskia

Always carry your valuables and passport etcetera on you. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe is an easy place to get your stuff stolen. According to Bulawayo police, things have become worse over the past years, cars are broken into and bags are stolen within a glance.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTSYou will have to get malaria prophylactics before entering Zimbabwe. When purchasing these, tell your doctor or pharmacist which areas in Zimbabwe you intend visiting. Start your course at least 24 hours before entering Zimbabwe and continue taking the pills for six weeks after leaving the country. If you suffer from side effects, try taking your malaria prophylactics at night after dinner. Precautionary measures that you can take to prevent contact with mosquitoes are: sleeping under a bed net or in a room/tent with mosquito proofing (remember to keep the flaps zipped at all times); spraying your accommodation with insecticide; making use of a mosquito-repelling lotion or stick; and wearing long-sleeved clothing, long trousers and socks when outside at night. Any person entering Zimbabwe from, or via, a yellow fever or cholera-infected area must be in possession of a...

by kryzzo

Swimming in the Zambezi may appear dangerous when you see the size of the local bathers! Actually while doing the water rafting, between each white water section, there is a large portion of calm water where crocos swim! If you fall down, in the rapid, chances are you will be able to go back up on the raft only when the rapid comes down, hence where the crocodiles are! My advice, and the local guide's is to get back into the raft as quickly as possible!

Canadian citizens now need a visa to travel to Zimbabwe (from February 2002)! I am really worried about what is happening. I am getting letters reporting violence there. Canadian government also advises citizens not to travel there if its not necessary. I cant imagine this beautiful country suffering. All those kind, kind and happy people! Will there ever be a better tomorrow for them?! On top of it all, drought is striking this country, bringing hunger to it.

Be aware of possibility of catching shistosomiasis. This parasite is absolutely disquisting. You can read more information here:http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~parasite/schistosoma.htmlOn the picture I think its S. japonicum, but in Zimbabwe you will find more likely Shistosoma mansoni.

by anaiis

My friend was robbed in Botanical Gardens in Harare. A man approached, who looked like he was working there. She spoked to him and I was watching from the distance (I was more suspicious). Soon he grabbed her bag and run. There are guards everywhere on public places, but he was too fast. She didnt loose a lot, because she wasnt carying a lot of money with her. But I had a lot more stolen from a locked room. I know that a lady who cleans rooms there did it (she only got the key and we even TOLD her, that we are leaving!), but making an accusation after the damage was done and after you had been warned ... Well, I survived with a little help from DHL... :) Interestingly, the travellers cheques were left alone. And more interestingly, our national currency, Slovenian tollar, was also stolen. Travellers cheques are accepted by most of the banks, usual exchange rates are even higher as for...

Our guide warned us about the peddlers that were selling things at the falls. They crowded around you and he said sometimes while one person is selling you something in front of you, someone else may be trying to lift something from your backpack. Pay in cash if possible. Credit card charges will get you ripped off because of the way they convert money (the official exchange rate is much lower than the street rate, if that makes sense). Also sometimes you get a better rate paying U.S. $, and sometimes a better rate paying Zim $. So do the math first before paying. My friend paid $30 Zim at the Falls for entrance fees for her family. I paid $40 U.S. for the same amount of people, because I didn't check which would be better. Be sure to pack all your valuables in your carryon, including meds, as our luggage was lost for a day between Johannesberg and Vic Falls. When I did get my luggage,...

by dreamworld

While driving on the main roads, I was stopped several times by Military Police checkpoints. First time I was quite afraid due to the fact that they are pointing their gun straight to you. I finally found out that it seems to be 'common' that Military staff make such things. They stop you, shake your hand, and.....EXPECT some cash money from you in order to let you go.Luckily (or not) for me...I never did such action (I don't support corruption) and had no problems at all. They clearly saw I was not a 'local' but a tourist and probably did not insist. At no time I was in troubles.Other dangers : The Kariba lake is infested by Tse Tse fly which is potentially dangerous. There is no vaccine agains the disease you could get from it. So you better be very careful before showing up there. All other parts of Zimbabwe are more or less safe with diseases. Still, a malaria pre-treatment is...

Travelling by public bus is...

by MayBarker

Travelling by public bus is always a hazard in Africa. Firstly keep your eyes on where your luggage is going to be placed. Don't let them put it on the roof! When the bus stops to let people off, make sure you watch they don't take YOUR luggage.Buses break down constantly. Make sure you take drinks with you - but don't drink too much - no toilets along the way! No problem for the fellas, but difficult for the ladies!
