A warning of note is the economy, money plays a big part of that. If you can take cash as it will get you alot further than with a credit card! Trading money with the locals could be a better idea than the bank exchange rate! Be carefull of false money!

Malaria is endemic. Take anti-malarial pills, as prescribed by a doctor. Take care not to getbitten in the evening when the mosquitoes that transmit this disease are active; use a mosquito netwhile sleeping and use bug repellant that is at least 30% DEET. If you develop a fever while inthe country, or within three months of departing, get a blood test to rule out malaria.

Like every country in Subsaharan Africa, Zimbabwe has a dangerously high proportion of HIVinfection. If you engage in sexual activity with anyone at all (including backpackers...or maybeespecially backpackers!), be VERY VERY CAREFUL! Of course, this goes for a sexualencounter in any country including your own, but Malawi, Zimbabwe, and South Africa are veryhigh risk areas.

The only problem we encountered in Zimbabwe was lost luggage. Of course when it arrived the next day from J'burg all the locks were broken and each of the three bags had things stolen from them. The airline (South African Air) did not bring the bags to the hotel either. We had to take a taxi and pick them up ourselves. We were told by many people that this is a common problem with flights from J'burg to Zimbabwe...

by LAOWAI

Don't cross the border like these people are- illegally. They're waiting for a signal when they'll rush into Mozambique to live and look for jobs. Five years ago the Zims were making fun of the Mozzies for their povertry and stupidity, but now it's coming back to haunt them. Mozzy is on it's way up and Zim is spiraling downward into a drak abyss.

Be careful when on safari. Not the crocodiles are the problem, rather the minefields that have been located a bit everywhere. Unfortunately the government seems to have lost track of a few mines, so from time to time an Impala (no, this is not the African word for Tourist) get's blown up every now ant then.

Heat: We visited the Falls during the beginning of August 2001 and it was already warm then (upper 20 Celsius). A local lady, that was wearing a short jersey, told us that it really gets hot from November. Bring enough sun burn protection/ointment along.

Departure tax: Everybody that leaves the country must pay a USD20 departure tax. This is payable in cash(!) - no other method of payment or currency is accepted! (Photo of some entertainment on the street in the town of Victoria Falls.)

Malaria: The Victoria Falls is a malaria area. November to May is regarded as high risk season but DO NOT ignore the other months. (The photo was taken inside the Livingstone museum in Livingstone, Zambia.)

We visited the Falls in August 2001 and it was already warm then (upper 20 Celsius). The locals tell us that from November it gets really hot - I am glad that we decided to go when we did. On the day that we visited the Falls they did not have any water for sale at the little shop (that only(!) sold Fanta and Coke!) and you can not get to the millions of gallons of water falling down there which make it very frustrating for an international tourist place like that. The local tap water is OK but I would suggest that you always carry water with you.
