Other than the penguins...

by Sharrie

Icebergs are probably the most common things sighted here in the waters surrounding Antarctica.I've always been fascinated by these sculpted ice. They come in all forms & shapes & are the most beautiful objects one will chance on in our lifetime. To me, they are even more fascinating than whatever wildlife there's out there in the wintery cold. One has to respect these fragile & yet capable of sinking ships ice!If you think about it, it's amazing how much power they have! Our first sighting of the iceberg is one of the most special moment. It's afterall the very 1st!For some, it's their first iceberg in their lifetime. It wasn't mine, though it's equally impressive. One of the largest one I've ever seen & got close to.

In Perspective

by Sharrie

Everything in Antarctica is in terms of size.It gives one perspective as to how tiny we humans are... relative to nature & the elements. Here, at Neko Harbour where we first landed on the Antarctica Continent, we hiked up the mountain (well, some of us did) at Trip's insistence. If you clicked on the pix, you'll see it clearly.Humans vs mountains.Think of all those lands, haha... if only they are in Asia, we'll all be rich! But even in this part of the world, we humans are "fighting" for a share of it!Do you know that Antarctica is actually "broken up" into different parts & "owned" by different country.Although there's The Antarctic Treaty, we were told we visited the British & Polish "territory"!Just for interest, the participants of the Treaty are:ArgentinaAustralia Austria Belgium Brazil Bulgaria Chile China Colombia Cuba Czechoslovakia Denmark Finland France Germany Greece Guatemala...

Embrace the cold...

by Sharrie

Hehe... just joking.Look, it's not cold! It's fun... I'll show u more how much fun everyone had! Later...Right now, just enjoy the scenic virtual tour.I can only do so much with my lens.Really, Antarctica is an experience to be embraced yourself by being there. It can't be experienced through any other means. Not by a long shot!I'll try my best to show friends & family glimpse of part of my experience. Hopefully this will fuel the desire to see it in person!Truly, it's something one must experience given a chance.I hope to be back again soon. There's just so much to be discovered in this bigger than North America Continent! It's a place where human spirit is challenged to the fullest & where one learns to deal with one's strength & weaknesses as well!A place where one lives & learns...

Capsule of time

by Sharrie

I do not know where to start.Just returned from the Arctic (Coldfoot, essentially) early yesterday morning & here I'm going through the 1000+ photos I've taken of this trip alone. No, not just Antarctica but Los Angeles, the Falkland Islands, Buenos Aires, Houston, Anchorage, Fairbanks & Coldfoot! It seems like I've been away from "reality of life" for a long long time. In the essence of time, "human" count amounts to 24 days total. Not many to most. But in my realm of reality, it's like I took a quantum leap... one that has never happened on any trip b4.Perhaps it's due to the distances traveled, perhaps due to the remoteness of the places traveled or perhaps due to the "freezing" of the brain cells, hehe... if only I could freeze age & beauty, lol... I don't know.Felt like a dream... one that I don't wish to wake up from.Frozen in time...

When you go to Antarctica...

by maryellen50

Items I considered a necessity for this type of travel are: motion sickness patches (most say the drug store pills and acupressure bands were ineffective), film 100ASA, 200ASA & 400ASA due to light conditions, warm fleech type clothing and UV sunglasses and plenty of books to read. Kayking in a cove one morning and finding a baby sea lion who was learning to swim.

Take plenty of film and spare camera batteries.

by K1W1

Take plenty of film. With natural scenery and wildlife as good as this, you'll get through plenty of rolls, and there's nowhere to buy film here! Also, with the cooler temperatures, batteries tend to run down quicker than normal. It's not the time to go flat! You should always keep your camera handy as you never know when something worthwhile will just appear.

Boy, did this lot stink!

by K1W1

Keeping snug together to keep warm. But did they have bad breath! It was cool on our first outing as it was just about sunset time. I was surprised to see how green it all was. Although it is an island, it is right at the tip of the Antartic peninsular and like most of the other passengers, I expected everything to be just ice and snow here. Unlike the Arctic, which is exactly that, Antartica has a land mass and as you can see, is not too different than many other countries on a winter's night. In fact, most of the Nth. Americans on our trip found it to be 'warm' here compared to the temperature back home.

Our first stop

by K1W1

Our first stop was at King Edward Island, on just the second day since leaving Ushuaia. We had had a good trip down and the calm waters had meant we had made good time as well. On this landing, some of the younger seals were curious about us, the older ones just couldn't be bothered.

Reflections

by K1W1

On the trip down to the peninsular, we had a couple of days to spare. The Canadian staff gave us information on glaciology, environment, political background and the types of marine life we could expect to see when we arrived. These lectures were interesting, well presented and invaluable when it came time to differentiate between penguins, dolphins, whales and the many birds we came across.

Who's fat?

by K1W1

February seemed to be a good time to catch the penguin kids in all their stages of changing 'suits'. They changed from a brown fluffy coat to the black and white before they were allowed to go swimming.
