about Inuvik, NWT Canada

by call_me_rhia

Inuvik, in the local Inuktikut language, means the "Place of Men" and the name perfectly suits the location. Three distinctive ethnic groups live there: Inuvialut, G'wichin Indians and Métis - all in perfect harmony if I may add. The town itself is nothing to write home about, but it's the northernmost point you can reach by road in Canada. One exception is when the Great Festival of Northern Arts is held - usually in July - then it really comes alive with concerts, exhibits, activities, and people. the strange architecture of Igloo Church, the Great Northern Arts Festival, the Artisans' Shops, and the little Art Galleries all over. I adore native art - shopkeepers loved my credit card

-take a 2 or more day trip by boat with a guide, and overnight in tent (all provided by the agency. -visit the sadest place on earth, where a few forgotten people live: the russian enclave Barentsburg (no russian visa needed, because it is international territory). Nowhere else you'll feel so small and lonely.

The northern part up to the pole side has an arctic climate. Mean annual temperatures are colder than on the south side. Maximum and minimum February temperatures range from 33F to -47F. The warmest month, July, has a 60F maximum and 40F minimum. Precipitation is extremely light, about 5-10 inches per year, making this essentially an 'arctic desert'. Snow has been recorded in every month of the year, and the annual average is 45 inches.

The average maximum and minimum July temperatures are 70F and 46F, respectively. Thunderstorm activity is common during June and July, and June through September is generally the wettest time of the year. Prevailing winds are out of the north. Freezing temperatures may occur at any time of the year, but particularly from mid-August on. July may be the only month that snow does not fall. Average minimum and maximum January temperatures are -10F and -30F.

The Arctic region is basically a frozen sea surrounded by land. The Antarctic means - 'Opposite of the Arctic'. The Antarctic region is a frozen land surrounded by sea. Those two facts makes those two regions so different from each other.

TRY SOME OF THE GREAT FISHING!! Releasing a big Lake Trout. These fish grow very slowly and feed mainly on whitefish, grayling and small children (just kidding!)
