some are quick to understand tourism business

always ask the price before you order anything in chaikhanas or serails.police officers in kabul, bamian or herat asked me to leave the serail and go to guesthouses for foreigners, cuz they fear for your security. that's rubbish cuz the serail is the safest place and much more fun/genuine, so don't bow to that.guesthouses of kabul charge foreigners 20 dollars per night, which is stolen!you can beat this down at least to 10 dollars, and even then it's twice what it's worth.
Bamiyan
by pazu
Beware of the little thieves at the hotels in Bamiyan, they tended to steal your slippers, notebooks etc... nothing really expensive but quite annoying.
Nothing you can really do, nobody will admit this "sin". The best way and probably also the only way to do, is to forget this.
money exchange
by husain
Currency update-- September 2003...The money exchange market is still governed by the guys on the street who will run to your car with currency notes... You can buy Afs (the new afghan currency), the Pakistani rupee, or Iranian rials for your Dollars. Dollars seem to be preferred to Euro in this part of the world at least... August- September 2002 experience...There is no official exchange rate, the amount you get for a dollar will jump about from hour to hour.we got money exchanged at anything between 39,000 afghanis, to 50000 afghanis to the dollar. The government is introducing new notes- printed in Germany- and they will simply slash away 3 zeroes from the current currency. The afghani notes themselves were printed in three different ways- albeit very similar. Rashid dostums area had one kind, for example.Within a few weeks the old afghani will be worthless, and people are starting to...

Be careful when you are outside
by smartfrank
Personally, I think most of the Afghan people are honest and sincere. But it does not mean everyone here is reliable. For foreingers here, the security is the most important concern. So you¡¯d better not visit remote place alone, and forget hanging out with friends at night. All in all, be careful when you are in out-of-door activities.
Go out with the help of your trusted local friends or officials.

December 27, 2001>Inviting Future Terrorism:Rising Afghan Death Count and US Policy on MideastBy Aaron G. LehmerIn early December, another dreadful statistic -- more than 3,500 dead -- was made public, except this time the figure did not refer to the appalling mass grave at Ground Zero. No, this gruesome number described the civilian death toll so far in Afghanistan from America's so-called 'surgical' air strikes since Operation Enduring Freedom began.Pulling together multiple accounts from a wide range of sources, University of New Hampshire Professor Marc W. Herold determined that these Afghani bystanders died from U.S. bombing runs, many of which directly hit villages scattered throughout the countryside. In his research, Herold discovered only rare or buried accounts of ongoing Afghan civilian deaths in the U.S. media, even though these appeared prominently and repeatedly in...
