    the army mess-- fixed time for meals of course- airconditioned- guns on the floor- diet pepsi cans in hand- huge big men in uniform and a few women- going chomp chomp...
    a bit too early for me usually- each meal. later i would end up feeding upon the packed MRE meals that were lying around at the media room...

    while figuring out ways to get from kabul to kandahar, there were two modes to consider- road and air.

    by road, it takes almost two days, and we were advised not to venture out without a band of armed guards. that option was quickly consigned to the bin...

    by air- some journalists often take a ride on american military helicopters and airplanes flying out of bagram air base... however, seats are never a sureity. besides, you run the chance of bieng asked to vacate your seat at the last minute in favour of an official who may need a seat.
    UN flights are frightfully expensive to get a ride on.

    it then turned out that there was this organisation- `air serv' which flew NGO groups to places like kandahar, islamabad etc. we got a ticketed flight on our way out and had to charter the flight on the way back...

    private taxi!

    Favorite thing: PHOTO : HALF NOMADIC TRIBE VILLAGE NEXT TO THE RIVER. They will a way temporarily, looking for the Green for their animals. Come back again to the old village after the Green grows there.

    DOWN here I can't feed you a reader, which Hotel to stay, where the best Restaurant to dine or which Night Club or Disco the best in town. They are almost not available at all. If there is a aggrasive enterpranuer to built up all this, he / she will be long time six feet under ground. DEATH PENALTY by Taliban Group...that the only alternative LAW here, * ALSHARI'AH* Taliban Version not mine.
