Shhelgazay

Shhelgazay is the district centre of Maiwand District, although on some a maps I have seen this place called Maiwand. It is a couple of hours west of Kandahar city along highway 1. Maiwand District is the last district on the highway before you enter Helmand Province. It is a fairly large city with lots of stalls for food and places to fill up. The area around the wadi is fairly nice and you can tell some areas were quite nice as I seen a place with a nice stone pool (green swamp water in it).

This lake goes on for kilometres and is quite large considering that this place is mostly a desert. You can see the change in water levels over a period of a couple of months. May it is quite high and by August you can easily see a drop in depth. There are no amenities around the lake so have that in mind if you ever decide to visit. It is located about 60 to 90 minutes north of Kandahar city along the road that goes to Tarin Kowt.

Kandahar

Kandahar is the capital city of the province with the same name. It is Afghanistan's second largest city with a population of around 315,000-320,000. It is an important city as what ever seems to happen here the rest of Afghanistan follows. It is a very old city with it's history possibly dating back to 3120BC while modern Kandahar was founded in 4th century BC by Alexander the Great. Another important feature is it's location, it is located where Highway 1 (the ring road around Afghanistan) and Highway 4 (direct route to Quetta, Pakistan) meet. The city itself is a mixture of mud huts, brick buildings and a surprising fancy area (probaly with lots of help from drug money) where some countries have diplomatic representation. At the time of writing this tip, Kandahar was still not the safest destinations it the world.

This Monument consists of 40 stairs leading to a chamber carved into rock. Inside is an inscription stating that it was built by Babur the founder of the Moghul Empire, and listing the domains of the Emperor.
