Several: High-end food at low-end price

by Saagar

Sea food in Bangladesh can be excellent. If you also manage to sort out those places that have the certain hygienic standard that you can cope with, then go for it and order the king prawn, mega tiger prawn and lobster grilled or curried. These dishes can be very well prepared and supremely tasty. Yet few locals can eat it because of the price tag, and few tourists dare to touch these dishes. For some reason, tourists prefer that samonella chicken with blood red centre instead, believing it's safer. Aaaaahhhh!!!!Curried lobster...Huge tiger prawns.... - grilled...

Spitfire grill: our favorite place

by marcokoffeman

Spitfire Grill was our favorite place to eat, especcially on THursday or Friday night when they have the buffet, with the barbeque/grill with a whole lamb roasting, big prawns or nice chicken. They must have a great recipe for making their stocks, because whatever soup you eat, it is always amazingly good. Spitfire Grill was one of the few places in Dhaka that served really nice desserts! Try the chocolate mousse, or bread pudding. They always have a selection at the buffet, so you can try most of them.Apart from the good food we loved the relaxed service, not so intrusive as most places in Dhaka. If you are into seafood, go upstairs to Salts, and find the same standard and service there.

Pizza Hut: best Pizza in town

by bkk800

I know, I know, Pizza Hut the chain has infiltrated the local culture. However, this Pizza Hut is different from the chains you see in the West. Firstly, the service is much better, because it is well staffed, secondly, it is the only one in town (so far). If you are looking for the comforts Western food in Dhaka, it's a good place to go. Also, they make a real fuss over you when it is your birthday. All pizza is good.

Kazana: Good lunch buffet, excellent food, safe to eat

by bkk800

The restaurant is bright, clean, it has nice surroundings, good service, good food. It is owned by the Kana Kazana chef on TV, the food was not too spicy or hot either. A good place to eat, especially the buffet. All the dishes were good and gave my fragile foreign stomach no problems at all.

all local restaurants: Hot chillies

by Saagar

Bengali food is good, but the locals like it hot - very hot. So the spices can really make you break out in a sweat and set your juices free. Apparently the chillies have some aphrodisiacal effect, too, but certainly any urges will be overrrun by nose runs...So, be prepared for the sweat, or negotiate for less spicy dishes. For once, you can also take onto the salt with gusto - you need salt replenishment here in tropical Bangladesh where you'll sweat a lot. If the food you are getting is devoid of spices thanks to your insistence, you can at least add some salt. For some reason the locals are using less salt in their food than their neighbours the Nepalis and Indians. I like it hot, but not as hot as the cook likes if he is free to choose. Some quiet negotiation about the spice contents, and with raita and plenty of rice, and perhaps a kheer for dessert - all stuff that kills off the...

Mr. Penguin: Ice cream at Chittagong's Patenga Beach

by Saagar

On Patenga Beach just south of Chittagong city there are numerous beach vendors that ply their trade. You will not go hungry or thirsty here unless you're out of cash. This young boy did a roaring trade - a favourite with the ladies; his smile or Penguin brand ice creams? I would never eat this ice cream, but I did not see anyone drop dead from eating it, though. I liked the conversation with the boy - he had a good, beach-aquired English.

Overcome the fear of the unknown and dip into the world of Bangladeshi street food!Freshly made in boiling hot oil, this won't kill you, but excite you.Watch for the hot spices, though, and find something you really like so you can order with confidence next time. Puris.
