Hindu temples of Comilla

by Saagar

Just south of the town of Comilla there is an interesting Hindu temple in the Bengali style. The interior is very gaudy, kitsch-like in the modern fashion of Bengali Hindus, but the site obviously harbours tradition and the gaudily painted gods don't repel but retain an air of ancient beliefs and philosophy. The local resident Brahmin and his pupils were very forthcoming and accommodating. I had the benefit of knowing some local Hindus, but other unaccompanied visitors appeared welcome, too.

Mainimati ancient cultural site and ruins

by Saagar

Near Comilla (8 km), and conveniently located near the Chittagong-Dhaka highway are the ruins of an ancient civilization. This was an early Buddhist culture, and was rediscovered during 2nd world war when troops were making defence positions against a possible Japanese invasion here (they came very near).Located near and partly on a long ridge in the otherwise pancake-flat landscape, the site must have been very prominent at its heydays in the 6th-13th century , with large religious and civilian structures. A museum shows many of the artifacts and mentally reconstructs the site for you if you just take your time here. There were many fine exhibits from a time when Norwegians had just invented living in caves... Museums can be a disappointment to me, but this one wasn't bad at all, even if obviously short of funds. The walk around the 8th century ruins of Salban Vihara monastery (photo)...

Rickshaw art

by Saagar

Every one of the millions of rickshaws in Bangladesh is decorated with paintings depicting romantic scenes and versions of physical paradises. Some is plain kitsch, other stuff may be worth a closer study and is real art.If you turn right on your way down to Sadarghat in Dhaka, just before the harbour area you will find the rickshaw painters' areas and workshops. You can also buy a panel with real rickshaw art.If you have a deeper interest, read the book Chasing Rickshaws from Lonely Planet.

Rangamati rowing boats

by Saagar

The small rowing boats used at the Rangamati reservoir are seemingly miniatures of the larger ocean-going sailing vessles used in Bangldesh. They look very sturdy and safe. The way they are being rowed is also interesting; the rower faces forward, standing and more or less pushes with the oars, not pulls as one normally does. A sort of Bangladeshi gondola? Good for boating trips on the reservoir, too.

Buddhist influence in the Raozan area of CHT.

by Saagar

Raozan district stretches north-east of Chittagong and is a center of Buddhism in the country. Many non-tirbal Buddhists live here as well, and Raozan is dotted with old and a few new examples of Buddhist architecture and religious expression.

Foy's Lake, Chittagong

by Saagar

In the same area as the hills that I recomended for walking is Pahartali (lake), mostly called Foy's Lake even locally, and offers soem pleasant boating. Good for afternoon and evening relaxation. Bring some drinks and picnic stuff and you'll be set for a nice and perhaps even romantic evening. Don't expect to be alone there, though. The rent-a-boat price is apparently negotiable, but not overtly expensive.

Patenga Beach boat hire

by Saagar

To get out from the beach at Patenga, for a sightseeing up the Karnaphuli river or simply out on the ocean a bit, you can hire local boats right there on the beach. The ruling concept is just to take a group of people out an puff a bit back and forth outside the beach and then jump into the sea for a swim. You may have to negotiate fares for other activities.

Patenga Beach, Chittagong

by Saagar

Not a real must-see, but just about the only alternative for a decent beach outing in Chittagong.Patenga is some 20 km out of Chittagong by the airport road near the naval batteries at the mouth of Karnaphuli river. This is a mediocre beach in terms of water quality and sand (rather muddy, both), but an excellent place for romance, juding from the locals. It is possible to swim, but do not get into daring clothes. There are some souvenir stalls, food stalls and vendors geared toward the locals. I found some good pink pearls here. The beach itself is below a storm enbankment, so there isn't much in terms of natural beauty here. But enjoy what there is here and relax away from Chittagong's exhaust-filled and exhausting downtown.

Signage and advertisment boards

by Saagar

I'm on a constant watch for interesting and funny signage and advertisement posters. Dhaka is quite ripe with them. Nothing beats radz@VirtualTourist.com's Bihar page, though - check it out!!!!Down toward Sadarghat in Old Dhaka there are many hole-in-the-wall shops with more or less English competent advertisement writers emloyed to capture their business in a few words. There is such a mass of people, businesses, organisations and things that even the not-misspelled or not-disconceptualized ones amaze me. Here is the door of the Lawn Mowers Corporation of Bangladesh...

Bangladeshi rural cooking

by Saagar

Getting aquainted with the countryside, you will be invited for a meal at someone's house sooner or later. The food is safer here than in the city and it's good, based on whatever raw materials can be had. They make the most out of it and take pride in theri Bengali cooking. Ensure you get to see the kitchen (iof they allow you) and see the sculpted clay stove and cooking utensils. An artistic delight!
