Syhlet Tea Plantations

by Zisch

Growing up without television has left its impression on me. At an early age, I was told to "go to your room and read!" which I did in abundance. Among my favorite stories were those relating to plantations - indigo, tea, coffee - it was the sheer isolation that appealled to me, and in the stories I read, the very isolation that made people act in such peculiar ways. My family visited planations in the northerly part of Bangladesh usually around the cool weather time. Syhlet was our destination. Nestled in the picturesque Surma Valley between the Khasia and the Jaintia hills on the north, and the Tripura hills on the south, Syhlet breaks the eternal flatness that is Bangladesh with its vast terraced spread of tea gardens. Here was everything a child could possibly want - thick jungles, orange groves and the endless winding paths through the plantations to explore for snakes. Later I grew...

Khulna and the Sundarbans

by Zisch

Khulna is the destination of the Rocket - and the district of the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Yet it also is the district where Bangladesh shows off some of her diversity.Located in the south western part of Bangladesh in the greater Khulna district, the Sundarbans or "beautiful forest", is a mangrove forest with an approximate area of 3600 sq. km. making it one of the largest forests of its kind in the world. It lies on the delta of three rivers - the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna on the Bay of Bengal. The forest is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. I know very little about trees, but the mangroves here are particularily impressive, gnarled and bent into the most bizarre shapes. Even if you don't see a tiger, there are deer, monkeys, birds galore and the estuarine crocodile. The only transport inside the...

Alternative Travel

by Zisch

The best way to avoid the rush of Dhaka is to leave as soon as possible - the city is not a particularily attractive destination though there is a wealth of mosques to visit and the markets are great for a few bargains. A trip I enjoyed very much was taking the paddle boat to Khulna. The boats are vintage paddle steamers - left overs from the British Raj - that ply their way rather ungracefully up and down the tremendous river network of Bangladesh . The trip takes anything from 20 hours to 24 hours, depending on the state of the rivers, and is a wonderful way of exploring the Sundarbans, seeing the river life. It is also possible to hire a boat or join a trip through the Sundarbans from Khulna to Kuakata and Heron Point, where there is a guest bungalow and plenty of wildlife to be seen. The steamers are called "Rocket"s and offer a variety of classes on board.

Talk to people

by Kaleisu

A surprising number of Bangladeshi people speak English, even in rural areas. Milam (far right) approached me while I was on a walk exploring the village of Matlab with my collegue Cristine (always explore with a buddy). He wanted to practice his skills in English and have us over for tea (or often Tang). We passed on the tea, but met his family. He has his arm around his mother and his father is in the doorway. They all live in the 2 room tin house in the background. Scrap metal is often used because wood rots so easily in this climate. Milam and his family were very interested in talking about the movie "Titanic." Brittany Spears and the Backstreet boys were also hot topics of conversation. One note of caution: Many Bangladeshi people I encountered were very interested in coming to the United States and will often (and persistantly) ask you to sponsor them for a visa, etc.

Riverain Bangladesh

by saidur_khan

Bangladesh is a land of mighty rivers, their tributaries and distributors, which flow essentially north south. Here is the land where the rivers take rest before meet the sea. The streak of meandering rivers makes Bangladesh as the world's largest delta and offers them in an unforgettable kaleidoscope of color. The rivers are soul part of rural life in Bangladesh. Riverside villages, fishing on river, sunset on river, sailing boats, daily life of the riverbank, landscape of river and village are the main attraction of riverain. While cruise on river you should easily see the Gangetic Dolphins. Cruising on river is a rewarding experience and pleaserous to feel the riverain Bangladesh.

INDIGENOUS HILLTRIBES IN BANGLADESH

by saidur_khan

The tribal people in Chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh is a great attraction. Situated in the far southeastern corner of Bangladesh, bordering Myanmar (Burma) the Chittagong Hill tracts are home to over a half a million indigenous peoples of 14 unique tribes. Much of the traditional lifestyle is still preserved - tribal kings, village headmen and a self-sustaining, natural lifestyle. All in a rich, still pristine foothill ecological environment. The Life of the tribal people is extremely fascinating. Majority of them are Buddhists and the rest are Hindus, Christians and Animists. Despite the bondage of religion, elements of primitiveness are strongly displayed in their rites, rituals and everyday life. The tribal families are matriarchal. The women-folk are more hardworking than the males and they are the main productive force. They usually greet a tourist with a smile.

Archaeological site of dating back over 1000 years

by saidur_khan

An isolated low, dimpled range of hills, dotted with more than 50 ancient Buddhist settlements of the 8th to 12th century A.D. known as Mainamati-Lalmai range are extended through the center of the district of Comilla. Salban Vihara, almost in the middle of the MainamatiLalmai hill range consists of 115 cells, built around a spacious courtyard with cruciform temple in the centre facing its only gateway complex to the north resembling that of the Paharpur Monastery(situated in north part of Bangladesh). Kutila Mura situated on a flattened hillock, about 5 km. north of Salban Vihara inside the Comilla Cantonment is a picturesque Buddhist establishment. This is a nice archaeological site for those who love and has interest on archaeology. There is a site Museum has a rich and varied collection of copper plates, gold and silver coins and 86 bronze objects. Over 150 bronze statues have been...

After taking the Rocket-steamer to Mongla or Kulna, don't forget to catch a cruise through the Sundarbans National Park. Calm!!We made a four-day cruise through the Sundarbands, seeing mangrove forests and tiger footprints. Highly recommendable. The price was about 200 US dollars per person, meals and excursions included.
