Old Dhaka

by janchan

The southern part of Dhaka, near the river is the old core of the city. Here is Lalbagh Fort, began in 1678 by prince Azam, son of the Mughal Emperor.Bangladesh was under the Mughal domination for more than a century, when most of the people had been converted to Islam.

Breaking Ships in Chittagong

by sallyeo

I went to see the ship breaking yards in Chittagong. Chittagong is on the delta and in the past has been a busy port, linking India to China. The best way I can describe it is that it was like walking into the set of the film WaterWorld. Gargantuan rusting ships were beached in the shallower waters. Over 1000 men worked on the shores. We drove along a straight road out to the yards. Shops and stalls sold just one item. One shop, near a tributary, sold just lifeboats. Tens of orange lifeboats hugged the banks. One shop just sold wash basins. We entered the ship yards, and were greeted by a sea of faces. Young boys walked past us, 20 to a sheet of steel, the steel hoisted to shoulder height as if they were 20 paul bearers at a funeral for the ship. All bare footed. All with no protection for their heads, their shoulders, their arms. And as they walked, they walked in unison, and they sang....

Cricket in Bangladesh

by CliffClaven

It's nice to hear some good news coming out of Bangladesh. A couple of years ago it was elevated to full status as the tenth international cricket-playing country, and the team was certainly not disgraced in its inaugural test match against India. If you are in Dhaka at the right time, you can experience Bangladeshi fervour for the game by attending a match at the national cricket stadium.

by atri

well, how about making patties from cow dung which would be dried up later and used as a fuel - best one, mind u, for cooking, which gives very special flavor to food cooked on it?or climbing date palms to cut them and collect juice for making raw date sugar - gur - from it?or husking the rice?or participating in some village mela - fair?or long boat trips from one remote village in delta of Padda or Jomuna rivers to another?or picking up tea leaves in the gardens of Sylhet hills?hard to describe - one must try that. otherwise it would be for u as an attepmt to taste the honey in the bottle by licking the bottle from outside only.

Hey any electricians here? Is this how you do it? Get out in the streets and look around, it's a lifetime experience. I went to Bangladesh to put up a new computersystem at the norwegian embassy. We certainly experienced the power breaks ;-) It was the start of the wet season and there were a lot of lightnings. The embassy had a generator, but it wasn't perfect. There were a lot of UPSs in use :-)

by Maline

Take a boat ride from Dhaka to Kulna with 'the Rocket'. Along the ride you float by a very flat landscape, and you understand why Bangladesh is so threatened by global warming. If sea-water levels rise just a little bit, so much of this country will return to the ocean!

by BorderHopper

In the dry season head out to the Sundurbans and you just may see a real Bengal Tiger. I think in the wet season the Sundurbans area is flooded which will prevent you from experiencing this beautiful area.An alternative to the Sundurbans and probably more exciting is a Bangladeshi protest. You have to have a little luck to see one of these...the kind of luck I had while hanging out near Topkhana Road. I saw these hooded guys marching down the middle of the street and new this would be a great photo oppurtunity

by EskiMoe

River cruise. Bangladesh is a country of rivers, and any stay will not be complete without actually sailing the rivers. It is incredibly peaceful on the river - absolutely the opposite of the busy, noisy and dirty roads and streets. See lots of interesting typical river boats, and study the river life, and the people and activities along the shores.

Mosques

by CliffClaven

After Indonesia, Bangladesh is the most populous Moslem nation in the world. Mosque minarets and domes dot the skyline of the cities and towns. But you would have to be seriously interested in architecture to get excited by most of the mosques in Bangladesh. There is none of the spiritual exuberance of the great mosques of Iran or the monumental grandeur of Egyptian mosques. In Bangladesh the mosques tend to be small and unadorned, although the Star mosque in Dhaka is worth a look.
