Once the tourism in Bhutan can only be made by travel agencies, they will provide only international meals for tourists. If you want to try local food, ask your guide and he will provide. But beware for the chillie...

We've been this café on our way to Punakha from Thimphu. It was a short stopover, we only had some tea. Then, on our way back, we had an opportunity to taste their food. A rich open buffet was ready when we reached there. Since the weather was chilly in high altitude (3116m for Dochula Pass), the huge stoves were burning in the café. I remember that we enjoyed the food. Then the young girls brought us some delicious tea.
Just don't forget, even god pays cash here.

On the way of the long and steep climb up to the Taktshang Monestery - or Tiger`s Nest - there is a nice lodge where you can take a rest and enjoy some GREAT food along with some liquids (can be tea, can be beer ;-).
It is a great stop offering an amazing view on the cliff with the Tiger`s Nest on it. It is a pitty we already passed it on our way down, when the worst never-ending Monsoon started, that I ever saw......we were swimming downhill!

You can eat in the kitchen and order custom made receipe
Favorite Dish: Rice of course and their well accalimed yak cheese and egg fried with a dash of chilli powder and sprayed with bits of chives.
The light yogurt warm drink is a good supplement

There are plenty of restaurants in Thimphu. We had our breakfasts as well as lunch once in the restaurant of Hotel Kelwang. The rest of the time we were invited for meals in private homes. The restaurant at Hotel Kelwang was nice with good food.

Swiss Bakery is my favorite restaurant. Hotel Druk is good. be sure to ask for real Bhutanese food or they will be afraid to give it to you. Bhutanese don't eat out too much because they believe that if you eat out you are too lazy to cook.
Bhutanese food is very hot but you can always get Palingpa food at the Swiss Bakery. Try it! You have to build yourself up to eating hot food. It is a badge of honor for the Bhutanese to eat as hot as possible. Doesn't everyone eat it hot?
Favorite Dish: The veggie burger (really a home made roll) is most excellent! They have 'Non-vegg' too for you meat eaters. Bhutanese love meat. Even the Buddhist monks eat meat. Amazing! Why are westerners so hung up on Vegitarianism?
