There are few itens to buy in Bhutan and part of it looks like they are made in India or Nepal. Weavering is a national handcraft and everyhouse you pass by there is someone doing this work. Beautiful...but very expensive. Till 900 US dolars for a shawl.
Timphu is the place to do the shopping. And one of the local specialties are the traditional clothes. I just had to buy a real GHO - the men´s dress. If you come from India/Nepal and you have still Rs left, spend them here. Because of the close relations between India and Bhutan the Indian Rupees are a second currency next to the Bhutanese Ngultrum. Also the 500 Rs bills are accepted (NOT so in Nepal, because of the fakes).
In Bhutan, you can shop for colorful masks, hand-woven bamboo items, wood carvings, stamps (great collections), silver, silk and bronzes. Handmade paper products, Buddhist paintings and religious thangkas are also popular items. Go to weekend market in Thimphu and you can see what you can find. Do not purchase antiques - they will not be allowed out of the country. It's hard to get cheap items as you can find in other popular travel destinations such as Nepal.
