Jame'Asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque is frequently called "The Mosque with a Heart of Gold". It is can be seen in the heart of Kiarong, Bandar Seri Begawan. Has golden domes and golden roofs. The city centre of Bandar Seri Begawan is very small and most of the major attractions are located here e.g. Royal Regalia Museum, Kampong Ayer (water village), Yayasan shopping complex, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Brunei River, Taman Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien (padang) etc. The main roads in the city centre are Jalan Sultan, Jalan Cator, Jalan MacAurther, Jalan Stoney, Jalan Pretty, Jalan Pemancha, Jalan Roberts, Jalan Sungeai Kianggeh etc. Essentially, it is easy to walk around as there are not many people and vehicles, and Bandar Seri Begawan is a very safe city and the locals can communicate in English. I have no problem walking around the city area, and I think one day should be sufficient to cover all the attractions in this area. Leave a Comment

You can see from a distance the royal palace of the Sultan of Brunei. It is called "Istana Nurul Iman". Some considered it the largest palace in the world, with over 1,700 rooms. Unfortunately it is not open to public or tourists for viewing except during the Hari Raya Aidil-Fitri holidays after the fasting month of Ramadan. As this follows the Muslim calendar, the dates will vary year to year. So if you happen to be in Brunei during Hari Raya, visit this royal palace with the masses. On other days, view it from a distance. Address: Along Brunei River, southern side at BSB

This is a fun thing to do. To walk over planks and wooden platforms on stilts over river, wandering through this famous Water Village. To see the way of life, their living rooms and laundry hanging out. There is the motorbike or bicycle here and there but no cars of course. And the golden dome of the mosque always in the background. It is home to over 30,000 resident complete with school, police station and medical clinic. A unique Brunei heritage not to missed. Address: Along Brunei River

This very famous landmark in Bandar Seri Begawan is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei (Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien). It is opened to non-Muslims outside prayer times (see below) and it is important to dress appropriately. Also, you need to remove your shoes before entering and there is a designated path marked in red carpet for you to walk. You need to wear a black robe provided at the entrance and no photography or video are allowed. Admission is free. Opening hours: Saturday to Wednesday - 8.30am to 12 noon, 1.30pm to 3pm, 4.30pm to 5.30pm Thursday - closed the whole day Friday - 4.30 to 5pm This mosque was built in 1958 and has a man-made lagoon next to it. The materials used are the finest marbles from Italy, stained glass from England and the carpets were flown in from Saudi Arabia and Belgium. See part 2 for more information, and more photos are at the travelogue section of this VT page. Leave a Comment Directions: The mosque is located along Jalan Stoney just next to the Yayasan shopping complex and Kampong Ayer (water village). It is so huge that you cannot miss it if you are in the city centre of Bandar Seri Begawan.

A huge playground in the suburb which I enjoyed going around and experience the rides in this disneyland-like attraction. This amusement park was initially built for family use of the Sultanate of Brunei, but was open free for residents and tourists alike in its first few years of operation, however, it began charging admission fee in the last couple of years. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the rides for both the old and the young for a reasonable cost as follows: One day package which means an unlimited all day access to ride (except Cyber Cinema Games and Go Karts). The fee includes entrance fee, all rides fee, and musical fountain fee Child Under 4ft 8 inches : B$3/child Adult : B$5 per person If you have other choices, there is a list of individual fee for each offer: Entrance Fee.....................B$1 per person One Ride Only.................. B$2 per person Garden Entrance.............. B$2 per person Cyber Cinema & Games.... B$5 per ride or B$10 for 3 rides VIP Buggies for Rent.........B$20 per Hour The Park is open on the following schedule: Wednesday - Sunday (Excluding Saturday) from 5:00PM to 12:00 midnight Saturday & Eve of Public Holiday from 5:00PM to 2:00AM Closed on Mondays & Tuesdays

An interesting thing to do is to look at along the river under a shade. You can see fast moving motor boats crossing the river or going up and down the river - carrying school children and local rural folks. You will heard the loud roars of the boat engines and the pounding waves on the river banks. River transport is still main popular mode of transport and the sound of the boats on the river is equivalent to the sound of traffic of cars in a city. Just to watch life goes by the river. There water taxis of different sizes. As a tourist, better negotiate your fare. There are also boat services to Temburong and Limbang, Lawas, Sundar and Labuan. Address: Brunei River
