Kg Ayer is actually a collection of 30+ villages built on stilts along the Brunei river ...

it is adjacent to bsb, the capital.. and is not part of bsb ....

the settlement is estimated to be 1000 years old .. now home to 30,000 bruneians..

brunei malays are descended from seafarers ... in the old days the womenfolks never set foot on land ... not once in their lifetime ....

as proof of continuous settlement, the lands surrounding kg ayer are full of cemeteries ...

also further upriver in kg limau manis, the recent discovery of a settlement from the 10th to 13th century ad ....

visitors can 'walk the planks' = jalan titian on the bsb-side of kg ayer ... if you are not comfortable riding the water taxis ...

Jame'Asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque is frequently called "The Mosque with a Heart of Gold". It is can be seen in the heart of Kiarong, Bandar Seri Begawan. Has golden domes and golden roofs.

Friday is a busy time to see Bruneian Muslim men going for prayers.

Largest mosque in Brunei built to commemorate the 25th year of reign of current Sultan of Brunei.

As a sea-faring nation, Bruneians has a long trading tradition...

villages in kg ayer specialised in a trade, a few as reflected in their name ..

eg. pandai besi = iron mongers

and were centres of excellence for silverware, brasswares, cloth weaving, boat making, ....

these skills are handed down thru generations ...

nowadays focussed at the arts and handicraft centre of brunei museum

You can see from a distance the royal palace of the Sultan of Brunei. It is called "Istana Nurul Iman". Some considered it the largest palace in the world, with over 1,700 rooms.

Unfortunately it is not open to public or tourists for viewing except during the Hari Raya Aidil-Fitri holidays after the fasting month of Ramadan. As this follows the Muslim calendar, the dates will vary year to year.

So if you happen to be in Brunei during Hari Raya, visit this royal palace with the masses. On other days, view it from a distance.

The city centre of Bandar Seri Begawan is very small and most of the major attractions are located here e.g. Royal Regalia Museum, Kampong Ayer (water village), Yayasan shopping complex, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Brunei River, Taman Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien (padang) etc. The main roads in the city centre are Jalan Sultan, Jalan Cator, Jalan MacAurther, Jalan Stoney, Jalan Pretty, Jalan Pemancha, Jalan Roberts, Jalan Sungeai Kianggeh etc. Essentially, it is easy to walk around as there are not many people and vehicles, and Bandar Seri Begawan is a very safe city and the locals can communicate in English. I have no problem walking around the city area, and I think one day should be sufficient to cover all the attractions in this area.

It is opened to non-Muslims outside prayer times (see below) and it is important to dress appropriately. Also, you need to remove your shoes before entering and there is a designated path marked in red carpet for you to walk. You need to wear a black robe provided at the entrance and no photography or video are allowed. Admission is free.

    Opening hours:
    Saturday to Wednesday - 8.30am to 12 noon, 1.30pm to 3pm, 4.30pm to 5.30pm
Thursday - closed the whole day
    Friday - 4.30 to 5pm

This mosque was built in 1958 and has a man-made lagoon next to it. The materials used are the finest marbles from Italy, stained glass from England and the carpets were flown in from Saudi Arabia and Belgium. See part 2 for more information, and more photos are at the travelogue section of this VT page.

This is a fun thing to do. To walk over planks and wooden platforms on stilts over river, wandering through this famous Water Village. To see the way of life, their living rooms and laundry hanging out. There is the motorbike or bicycle here and there but no cars of course. And the golden dome of the mosque always in the background.

It is home to over 30,000 resident complete with school, police station and medical clinic. A unique Brunei heritage not to missed.

An interesting thing to do is to look at along the river under a shade. You can see fast moving motor boats crossing the river or going up and down the river - carrying school children and local rural folks.

You will heard the loud roars of the boat engines and the pounding waves on the river banks.

River transport is still main popular mode of transport and the sound of the boats on the river is equivalent to the sound of traffic of cars in a city. Just to watch life goes by the river.

There water taxis of different sizes. As a tourist, better negotiate your fare.

There are also boat services to Temburong and Limbang, Lawas, Sundar and Labuan.

    Chinese Temple
    by freddie18, 1 more photos
Brunei is known to be an Islamic country and therefore have considerable number of mosques and prayer halls. It also allowed some other faiths to build their place of worship like Christian, Hindi temples, and Chinese temples.

A Chinese temple in Brunei can be found in Bandar Seri Begawan. It's design of loud colour of red made it so distinctive and attractive and stand out among other structures around it. The temple is a typical Chinese with its elaborate design and colour. You will be able to see in the pictures I posted. The roof which was painted in green at the time of my visit was of a very unique style. Very chinese indeed.

Close to Brunei Hotel and Tamu Kianggeh where a group of vendors congregate and sell farm products and valuable items that you can bargain. So, there you go. If you plan to visit the Chinese Temple, you can probably be busy going around its vicinity.
