Riverside food stalls (gerai makan Jalan residensy: outside

Eat sate and nasi goreng under the trees enjoying some cool air on the riverside, watching the boat taxis; several small stalls there, friendly people; just be patient service is not top at the ones I tried. For desert, go to the market 100 m from there and buy the small sweet bananas or if the season is right, rambutan or manggis (just delicious). 2 to 5 US$.

    Pantai restaurant: Kacang Bubur

by kokoryko Written Oct 21, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Located on a terrace above the swimming pool, with view on the sea; modern wood architecture, open view, fans (no air conditioning), silver cutlery, competent staff; the buffet is really wonderful , with lots of food varieties, from Asian to international; grilled shrimps or marinated squids are the best among them; most interesting desert is the “kacang bubur” or sweet lentil soup, slightly aromatised with durian (the king of fruits, but it is a personal opinion): delicious, and it is a pity most western people avoid to try this really delightful desert. Price: expensive (I was invited), but probably worth the money.

    Favorite Dish: Kacang Bubur !

head down to the night markets overlooking the sungai brunei in the centre of bandar seri begawan. the vendors there sell really good and cheap satays and other local dishes. the atmosphere and food is great and it's about the only place in brunei to mingle with locals after dark.

GULAI ASAM PEDAS ( name of the dish ). Look nice eh ! But be carefuuuul, this is not a Italian Piza, this dish is VErrry HOOOoot. The ingredients consist of + - 200 grams of Red Chilly and mix again with a little bit curry powder. If you can take it...wow, then I know you have a seasoned tongue like me ( The Tongue of Great KAMAL Khan ).

There are many various international and local eating areas. Behind this mosque is the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation Complex.

There are many shop houses including eating areas which served local and international cuisine. Seen at both sides of the picture here.

You can also eat and watch the passing boat, there is a restaurant along the river just 4 minutes walking down from here.

Favorite Dish: Nasi lemak which is popular rice cooked with coconut milk. Servings includes anchovies (dry small fishes) cooked with sambal (spicy condiments), slices of cucumber and variations from chicken to beef slices. Some can be hot and spicy too so need to get ready a glass of cold water.

There is a selection of international fare, however, choices are rather limited. One could try the restaurants at Yayasan Complex or at the Kiulap area. If budget is not a problem, Sheraton Hotel would also be a good bet.

For those who prefer to have a good atmosphere to enjoy their dinner in, then proceed to The Empire Hotel and Country Club. It's THE biggest and grandest hotel in Brunei. It faces the sea and has a beautiful pool which blends itself to the sea. It's best to visit the hotel in the day time to have a good view of the blue sea.
