One for the Road

by Wild_Orchid

This picture shows a major road of Bandar Seri Begawan at around 5.30pm. Isn't it amazing, the lack of cars on the road?In Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, the roads would be a snarling mass of traffic horrors at such time of day. The Brunei-ans have a lifestyle that is similar to what I've seen in Kuching. They get home earlier (no traffic jam) and spend time in outdoor activities and with family & friends.Hmmm, maybe I should retire here. Life moves at such a leisurely and stress-free pace. For some excitement, I'll buy a Porsche and will have plenty of road to be a speed demon! haha

Where have all the people gone?

by Wild_Orchid

As the song goes: This ole heart of town ain’t feeling the beat, that’s for sure.Nights at Bandar Seri Begawan are rather quiet: Other than the bright shining beacon of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin mosque the rest of the old town was surprisingly quiet. For a town wallowing in oil, the streets were dimly lit with few shops open and even fewer people around. I had no worries about the safety of the area and in spite of it’s ghostly quiet feel, it was after all only seven-thirty in the evening. The nightlife (which in Bandar Seri Begawan means cineplexes, shopping malls, ice-cream parlours and coffee bars) now centres in the district of Gadong located at the edge of the old town. That was a walk too far for me. Of course, if you are so inclined, it's not hard to catch a cab.

Arabian Nights

by Wild_Orchid

Visit the Mosque at Bandar Seri BegawanSultan Omar Ali Saifuddin, father of the present Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, built this mosque in the 1950’s and the mosque is named after Sultan Omar himself. It is an impressive sight especially at night when it is floodlit against the dark night sky. Bathed in light, the domes which are coated in gold appear to glow like a shiny golden beacon, calling out to the faithful and promising light in a world of darkness.

SULTAN OMAR ALI SAIFUDDIEN MOSQUE

by ancient_traveler

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is the one of the most beautiful mosques in South East Asia. With its soaring minarets and golden dome, the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is an oasis of tranquility within the bustle of downtown Bandar. It is built of Italian marble, gold mosaic and English stained glass, but with craftsmanship that reflects classical Islamic architecture. The mosque has often become the building that represents the image of Brunei Darussalam in the international arena. From the picture that adorns the tourism marketing campaign for visits to Brunei Darussalam to one in the back of Brunei currency notes. As one of the main and biggest mosques in the country, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque often becomes the focal point for religious rituals. Even at an elderly age, the mosque with its strong and solid structure and facade is still sturdy in form, standing proudly in the...

KAMPONG AYER

by ancient_traveler

Kampong Ayer, the country's historical attraction and the world's largest water village that is home to more than 30,000 people is next on the list. It is a place where houses on stilts were built on Brunei River. The houses in Kampong Ayer are joined by a maze of inter connecting wooden walkways. There are water taxi services to Kampong Ayer, with stations at Jalan Kianggeh and Jalan McArthur. Water taxis are the most common form of transport in Kampong Ayer, which is Brunei Darussalam's renowned water village. Regular water taxi and boat services also ply between Bandar Seri Begawan and Bangar (in Temburong), Limbang (in Sarawak), Labuan and some towns in the Malaysian state of Sabah.
