Kampung Ayer

by aukahkay

A journey to the Brunei River is an exceptional experience. For at least 600 years, Bruneians harvested the bounty of the seas and forged a way of life that is still strongly evident in the lives of 30,000 inhabitants of Kampung Ayer, the capital's sprawling water village. The village's century-old mosques, homes, markets, schools, clinics, police and fire stations hover on stilts on the shallow waters of the Brunei River.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

by aukahkay

This is Brunei's most recognizable landmark. It represents the nation's strong faith in the Islamic religion as the purely white mosque symbolises the beauty of Islam. Built in 1958 during the reign of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien, the mosque stands in the center of a man-made lagoon on which rests the 16th century royal barge.

Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

by aukahkay

Built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of His Majesty the Sultan's reign, this mosque is the largest in the country and the most magnificent. With its intricately ornamented minarets and shimmering golden domes clearly visible along the main route from airport to town, the mosque towers over landscaped terrain dotted with fountains. This is the only mosque in Brunei with separate prayer halls for males and females and is fully airconditioned. The marble tiles are imported from Italy and the dome is gold guilded.

Proboscis Monkeys

by Muzzaa

There are quite a few of the monkeys that hang out in the trees along the river. You can take an organized tour if you wish, there are quite a few available to book in BSB, or you can arrange with a taxi driver. Along the river are the odd croc, many birds, some tree lizards and snakes, and of course the proboscis monkey. They are very interesting to see and well worth your time to search them out.

Labi Longhouses

by tot_traveller

Further down the Labi Road, past Kampung Labi itself, the forest gives way to several examples of a form of dwelling unique to the island of Borneo which is the unique Iban longhouse. Literally a village under one roof, a longhouse consist of a single shed-like structure divided along its length into separate family lodgings, each of which is accessed via a communal area running the length of the building. This communal area is the venue for the village population's social and daily indoor work activities. The nearest longhouse to the town of Labi is Rampayoh Longhouse which is divided into 16 lodgings. Others include Mendaram Besar Longhouse, Mendaram Kecil Longhouse and, at the end of the road, Teraja Longhouse. The longhouses seen here are among the most beautiful structures you will find in this region.Several trails head off into the jungle along this stretch of the road. They are...

Bandar Seri Begawan

by tot_traveller

About 60,000 people lived in the capital city of Brunei. Bandar Seri Begawan is the only town of any size. The city is neat, clean, and modern with wide roads and extravagant public buildings. Tourists will feel awed with the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, one of the most impressive and modern mosques in the East. This giant golden-domed mosque was originally built in 1958 near to the Brunei River in its own artificial lagoon. It was built with pure luxury in mind - the interior is covered with Italian marble walls, plush carpeting and an elevator. At the Brunei River is Kampung Ayer, a centuries-old collection of 28 water villages built on stilts. 30,000 people inhabit the place and a visit to this place would be a real highlight to any tourists. Kampung Ayer is a strange mix of modern and ancient. Do not miss out on this place! The capital city also sports some excellent museums. There is...

Sungai Liang Forest Recreational Park

by tot_traveller

This is one of several parks which have been developed and maintained for public recreation. The park is one of the very few lowland forest areas in South-East Asia and has facilities for general recreational activities, including hiking. It also caters for the natural history devotees, with self-guided or organised group tours of the forest. The main pond, with its shelter platforms and open areas in the central complex, should satisfy visitors looking simply for fresh air and beautiful surroundings. The more energetic may care to explore the network of well marked nature trails that wind their way around the park, including a high-level canopy walkway in the treetops. This wonderful facility will give you a totally different perspective on the rainforest. The park is 450 metres from the main Sungai Liang junction along the road to Labi.

Jerudong Park Playground

by June.b

Beside the Jerudong Polo and Golf Club, the Jerudong Park Playground is the Disneyland of Brunei. MJ did a concert in the the park's ampitheater in 1996, for free, the Sultan's gift for the people in celebration of his birthday. When it opened in 1994, the park and all its rides are free. Entry with all those available rides are BD5 dor adults and 3 for children. The park is still open for the public however it is slowly deteriorating, most rides are closed, and most of the time you'll find yourself and very few people owning the whole place. The last time we went there, only a few dozen people plus the park staff and the restaurants crews.Dubbed as south-east asia's largest and most expensive amusement park, but it lost it's charm and days of glory. Though there are times the park have lots of people - at least on the hundreds, when there're live concerts at the ampitheater, or any special...
