Kampong Ayer

by June.b

Kampong Ayer or Water Villages is one of Brunei’s well kept heritage. It is a whole world of its own with everything a virtual community should have – a school, place of worship, stores and shops, even its own fire station.Kampong Ayer is a conglomeration of many villages with houses made of wood with well-built shafts submerged on the water making the houses looks to be floating above the water from a distance. The houses and villages are connected to each other by about 3,000 wooden boardwalks. According to census, there are about 30,000 people living in the kampong. Generally, they prefer living in kampong since their ancestors been living here for centuries. For tourists, the kampong is navigable by water taxis. Fare is BND2 (or US$1.40), but you can have a half hour tour of the whole Kampong for BND10 – 15 for the whole boat. Walking along the boardwalks can be fun too, but be polite...

Makan at the BSB Airport

by cochinjew

there are some fancy places at the BSB airport but I wanted to see where the workers went to eat and sure enough there is a Cafe open at the entrance to the chek in area, which is non pretentious and open 24 hours.. so that is the choice.had egg murtabak and teh tahrek. while i was sitting there eating, the very same man who took me in his taxi three days back came over and offered to pay my food.. i had paid him 25 bnd for the night time ride from airport to the terrace hotel. i politely declined but neverthless he joined and told me his stories about his days as a sargeant in Brunei Military Forces, now retired at 900 bnd monthly pension and has a taxi he can drive. He was a Brunei malay was dressed in a nice green tunic, which he said he wore to the prayers and occasions

Bukit Subok / Subok Hill

by twotravelbugs

For good views across the city, Kampung Ayer and further up the Brunei river, talk a walk up Bukit Subok. There are concrete steps most of the way up, steep, and watch if its wet and in places they are slippery. Hard work in the heat and humidity, but worth the effort for the views. And its a nice patch of green and quiet in the city.

Gadong Night Market

by twotravelbugs

We went here for dinner one night. Excellent value. For about NZ$2 we both ate well. It would cost you a bit more to include meat. We wandered round the stalls getting little bits and pieces from several of them. Mainly battered and fried veges, or vege fritters, but also "kueh melayu" a sweet pancake filled with peanuts, raisins, sugar and chocolate powder. Yum!

Brunei Museum and Malay Technology Museum

by twotravelbugs

About 5km east from the city centre are these two museums, well worth a visit, both were free when we were there. Contain historical treasure, ethnography, Islamic treasures, and of course an oil exhibit, and the Malay Technology museum has sections on traditional technology. Neither museum is huge but both are interesting. On the way to the museums, stop at the tombs of Sultan Bolkiah (5th Sultan of Brunei) and Sultan Ali.

Seria Town (Pekan Seria)

by SLLiew

Driving from Miri to Bandar Seri Begawan, we passed by Seria Town. This is where oil was first discovered in Brunei. So there is no surprise that Shell Brunei has its headquarters near here. There is also an interactive museum for children called OGDC (Oil Gas Discovery Center). For us, it was just a restroom stop at the local Plaza Seria.

Jerudong Park Playground

by SLLiew

At one time, this was highlighted as the Disneyland equivalent for Southeast Asia. The Jerudong Park Playground was popular when admission was free with park rides and shows for a family outing. Since then, admission fees is imposed and many of the rides are reportedly closed. There are talks of future plans to make the park attractive again. There is also an adjoining Polo Club and Golf Club. Jerudong Park is located 30 minutes from Bandar Seri Begawan. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check operating hours during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Capital of Brunei

by SLLiew

Bandar Seri Begawan is known as BSB is short. It has a population of about less than 50,000 and is the largest town and capital of Brunei. The most famous tourist landmarks are the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Ayer Kampong. English is widely spoken although Malay is the offical language.

The mosque

by Emile72

One of the most beautiful buildings/mosques I have ever seen. It looks so beautiful in both daylight and evening. You can visit it from the inside as well, and you keep continue making pictures from the exterior. I would say next to floating village, the top attraction of the capital.

Foating village

by Emile72

Next to the mosque you can visit the floating village. The whole village is build on the water and you walk over wooden "bridges" through the houses where people live. Very interesting and people are very friendly. Especially all the kids run out of the house to greet you. The houses are all very close to eachother and you almost walk through people's places and a good chance to see how people live. Recommendable.
