Luagan Lalak Recreational Park.

by kokoryko

Recreational Park is the official name for this swamp area fitted with wooden walkways ; these ways are in variable condition (one is not usable) ; it is a swamp, with its particular smell, particular flora, and fauna; the fauna is essentially fishes (there were fishermen when I visited, not sure fishing is allowed…….). Shelters on the swamp allow to have a picnic or a rest in the shade, enjoying a light breeze and the view over the black waters.

Waterfront tour

by David92382

Brunei is not the most exciting of places with limited night life and because the smallness of the country. One fun way to get a feel for the capital city is to go to the waterfront and bargain with the local boatmen there for a tour of the harbor. They will negotiate with you so do not necessarily take their initial asking price.Once you agree on a price and the length of the tour. You will board a small motorized boat (which can hold up to four passengers) and be off on your tour of the harbor. You will get a nice view of the city, the palace, the main mosques, stilted houses and apartments, other boats and ships, natural vegetation, and life in general along the water front. It is a great way to get oriented and to get a feel of the city especially if you only have like a day to spend there.

Water Village (Kampung Ayer)

by Sambawalk

Behind the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, water villages unfold along the Brunei river. This labyrinth of bright homes and restaurants sits on stilts above the water. The best way to explore the water villages is by water taxi, which travels at high speed!

The market on water side is worthe a short visit, even for 5 minutes. Always interesting to look at people, listening them selling their ware. And, what is better than a smile for keeping you in mood for the rest of the day?

Tasek Merimbun (Merimbun heritage park)

by kokoryko

A forest walk in a small piece of preserved nature in Brunei (except Temburong) ; you need a car to get there and then park at the wardens house parking and go for a one or two hours walk. Big old trees, big ferns can be seen. Old teakwood trees and sandal wood trees are there (one needs to see one day where the furniture we sit on, or the fragrances we like to smell, come from) among tens of sorts of palm trees. Strange mushrooms grow on dead wood. After the forest walk go across the nearby lake on the stilt bridge to a small island to have a look at the black water (the water is clean, crystalline; it is the peat at the bottom of the lake that gives that impression) and the quiet nature and . . . . beware of crocodiles! Hahaha ! (There is a sign for that , but I did not meet one!).Located 50 km from Bandar Seri Begawan, in Tutong district; easily accessible by road; was there with a...

Taxi boats

Take this kind of transportation to go to Kampung Ayer, or, just let the boatman show you around. Hey generally do not speak English but are friendly and try to do their best to show you the interesting things. They can take you to have a view of the Sultan’s Palace from the waterside. You can find them almost everywhere on the port area, waiting for customers.

Gadong shopping mall

by kokoryko

Much bigger as the Yayasan complex. . . . . You even can buy cars! Impressive, if you think there are only 100000 inhabitants in the capital city. Tens of small shops are gathered around like small chicken around their mother hen. Jalan Gadong, 5 mn drive from downtown.

Yayasan SHHB Foundation complex

A shopping centre where you can find almost everything; a part of western world in this country. You can find most of luxury brands of shoes clothes, perfumes etc, you usually find in the big western cities. Interesting to watch the local customers and staff in traditional attire going around in this consumerism temple.I prefer to watch people outside ! Look at this man having lunch so quietly.
