Istana Nurul Iman

by adnan1977

The largest residential palace in the world, the Istana Nurul Iman is the home of His Majesty Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah and the site of his Prime Ministerial offices. Built on a leafy, riverside sprawl of hills, the Istana boasts golden domes and vaulted roofs which echo Islamic and Malay architectural influences. One good place to view the Istana, especially at night, is from Persiaran Damuan, the palm-tree studded park that ambles along the river bank on Jalan Tutong. A popular early evening venue for joggers and strollers, the Damuan features paved walkways, outdoor sculptures by ASEAN artists on the theme of Unity and Diversity, and al-fresco dining at night.

Jerudong park

by adnan1977

Jerudong Park Playground The tempo of tropical nights in Brunei took on a new dimension of fun and fantasy with the opening of Jerudong Park Playground in 1994. Bathed in breezes from the South China Sea, this state-of-the-art theme park was launched to coincide with His Majesty's 48th birthday celebration. Paved walkways and a locomotive network negotiate fragrant tropical gardens to link traditional, relatively tame amusements such as the old-time carousel and dodgem cars to the futuristic surprise of wild action simulators and the awesome Giant Drop. A confrontation with roaring dinosaurs, a leisurely game of larger-than-life chess, a front-row view of the synchronised dancing fountains or a paddle-boat ride on the lagoon provide rejuvenating changes of pace from the likes of the infamous Pirate Ship and Pusing Lagi (a roller coaster ride). Jerudong Park Playground lies along Bandar...

Like father, like son

by Wild_Orchid

The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque was built recently by the present sultan, whose name the mosque carries. Not to be outdone by his father, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin (see pic above), the mosque built by the current sultan also has domes that are gold plated. To me though, the older mosque had more character.Visitors are welcome. Please note that no shoes are allowed inside the mosque and women must cover their arms, legs and head before entering.

All you ever wanted to know about oil and gas

by CliffClaven

The Royal Brunei Museum is a few kilometres from the centre of the capital along the Brunei River. It houses an odd mixture of wonderful Islamic art and a history of the oil and gas industry in Brunei. Oh, and they also have some vases recovered from a boat which sank in the area five centuries ago.

Spacious accommodation

by CliffClaven

The Istana Nurul Iman is the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei. It is the largest residential palace in the world, stretching more than half a kilometre along the bank of the Brunei River. The palace has 1788 rooms; at a room a day, it would take His Majesty nearly five years to inspect the whole palace.

Glittering opulence

by CliffClaven

You can’t miss this magnificent place of worship. It dominates the skyline of the capital. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque was built in the 1950s and incorporates Italian marble, English stained glass and gold mosaics. The impression of glittering opulence is reinforced by the shimmering reflection in the lagoon. The mosque may be visited by non-Muslims from Sunday to Wednesday.

Don't forget about the airport tax!

by sim1

I spend my last precious Brunei Dollars on coffee and lunch not knowing about the airport tax. Oops... that was a bad surprise! But luckily there was a desk close to the check-in counter where I could exchange some money to Brunei Dollars. When you depart for Malaysian States or Sabah and Sarawak you have to pay B$5.00 departure tax and for all other destinations (Like Bangkok) the amount is B$12.00 per person.

Coffee, no beer!

by sim1

I have to admit that I didn't take a water taxi to visit the water village. We were feeling tired and just wanted a cup of coffee and after that it was time to catch or flight home. We didn't order any beer though, as you can't buy that here in Brunei. So coffee and tea it was.Together with the coffee we were served this bowl of peanuts. Not normal ones (not for me anyway, hahaha) as they serve little fishes mixed together with the nuts to spice it all up. I enjoyed it lots though, yummy. I've seen it more around during my trip, hahaha, so it's not that exceptional. I just don't know it here in Sweden ;-)

Kampong Ayer

by sim1

The Kampong Ayer is huge. It is a collection of 28 water villages built on stilts and around 30,000 people live in this area. It stretches for several kilometres along the banks of the Brunei river. The village has its own markets, mosques, schools, police and even a fire station. In this picture you can see the golden top of the mosque and its minaret glistering in the midday sun.
