    ALWAYS CARRY A TORCH HERE

by DennyP Written Feb 28, 2010

A SMALL GOOD RELIABLE TORCH HERE IS A MUST HAVE..

Favorite thing: Here in Myanmar the electricity is cut off anytime of the day or night without notice..ALWAYS carry and have a torch handy with you after dark...Most bigger Hostels hotels etc have big generator backup but the poorer places don't..There is minimal street lighting and walking at night can be hazardous..when inside large Temples and Payas never be without it...I have one that is self charging...these are good as there are no batteries to let you down

    Watch the world go by....

    Bagan-Nyaung Rd, Myanmar

Fondest memory: Get a hotel with balcony overlooking the street if you can. I found it to be fascinating just watching everyone go about their business. This picture pretty much sums up peak hour in Bagan - bicycles, cars, horse-drawn carts, rickshaws, motorcycles and the obligatory overcrowded ute.

It was a good way to unwind after a big day touring the monuments.

Favorite thing: Please meet my new friends (only for a few minutes, hehe) the long neck ladies in Bagan. I read they are the people of Padaung tribe, I think they looked lovely wearing brass or silver rings on their neck, it is their tradition to wear the rings on their neck when one reaches 10 years old or even younger, and each year another ring is added until they are 1 feet long. Just amazing...

  • Travel guide for bagan

by SINtraveller Written Dec 31, 2005

Favorite thing: If you are using lonely planet (myanmar) as a guide to bagan, try to get the 8th ed., cos in the edition there's a section that dedicate to the temples of bagan. From what i know, the latest edition no longer contains this section.
And when you comes across a temple which you want to know the name, the local villagers can tell you that temple is labelled as number what on that section (pg 293). Amazing...

    360 degree views

by Hewer Written May 1, 2005
    View SW from Dhammayangyi Temple

Favorite thing: There are so many points in Bagan where you have 360 degree views of pagodas and temples. It is much more dramatic than you could imagine or even a map could indicate. I was constantly surprised here!

This is a ground view from Dhammayangyi Temple. You can see the Pyathada Pagoda in the distance on the right hand side.

    Half-time by the River

by Hewer Updated May 7, 2005
Ayeyarwady River by Bupaya, Bagan, Myanmar

Favorite thing: Bupaya is a good place to plan your break from touring if you are making a day of it. It is located in Old Bagan directly on the Ayeyarwady River. There are plenty of places to sit outside and you can enjoy the breeze and watch the boats go by. It is also located on a bend in the river so you can see other monuments which are also riverside far off in the distance.

You can rest your legs and refresh your visual palette.

    Onsite weather prediction available

Favorite thing: This one raised a chuckle from us! It was in the grounds of the hotel. Needless to say, we consulted with the weather forecaster each day.

  • Flight from Yangon to Bagan

by SINtraveller Written Dec 31, 2005

Favorite thing: I took the left hand window seat when flying from yangon to bagan. From the window, the Ayeyarwaddy river could be seen, as well as the bird-eye view of bagan when the plane was about to land.
