Modelled after the Mahabodhi paya in Bodhgaya, India, this temple was built during the reign of King Namtaungmya (1215-1234). The temple, a 140 foot high structure built in brick and whitewashed stucco, consists of a large square pyramidal tower, very ornamented with niches containing 450 Buddha statues and topped by a spire and an umbrella. Very interesting and completely different from other constructions of Bagan.

Mahabodhi Temple, an Indian temple in Old Bagan, was built by King Zeya in 1215 AD.
It is patterned from the Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya, Bihar India. To commemorate the place where Buddha attains enlightenment.
This temple is different from other bell shaped temples in Old Bagan, with its typical Indian pyramid structure. And niche on the pyramidal structures are the buddha images. The niche buddha images is also seen on all walls of the temple.
Portion of the temple is also destroyed on the 1975 earthquake but now restored.
On a late afternoon, its good to relax on the benches on the left side of the temple shaded with trees. Its nice place to admire this Indian temple, with its walls having buddha face on it and also to contemplate which temple to go next. :-)
