This gate is part of the ancient 9th century wall. There are two niches containing images of the nats (protective spirits) or guardians of the gate. In the right is the image of Lord Handsome and to the left the image of Lady Golden face, both are very revered and most of the locals stop here to present small offerings to prevent traffic accidents.

Tharabar Gate built in 849 A.D by King Pyinbya, is the main gate of the east wall and the only structure left of the old city built. It is situated in Old Bagan.
There was originally twelve gates permitting people to get in and out of the walled city during that time but only this survives nowadays. Tharabar is derived from the old Burmese language term "Sarabhanga" meaning "shielded against arrows".
It's easy though to be ignored if you're not guided or using a map because most of the structure is ruined. Stucco carvings of nats (guardian sipirts) can still be found. On the left is the side of the gate is the brother "Lord of the Great Mountain" reknown for his strength and on the right side is the sister "Golden face" famous for her exceptional beauty.

At the east side of old bagan. Tip: plenty of resturants outside tharaba gateway, however quite a distance away from the old bagan hotels.
