Moulemein was the capital of British Burma. after independence, it became the capital of smuggling from Thailand. A large number of Bangladeshis arrived to swell the already a sizable portion of south indian muslims. There are sunni and other moslem prayer halls. of the three in the main street, i liked this one best, with its turquoise paint.
Rudayard Kipling had written a poem about Burmese girl.. standing by a pagoda and looking at the water.. could very well be this paya which is part of a complex of pagodas in the hillside of Moulemein
