Burma Restaurants

  • Kandawji Palace Hotel

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Rangoon Restaurants

I think this is the only Hotel in Yangon currently offering a Dinner with Traditional Show. The usual fare is served buffet style but due to lack of dinner patrons ours was served on the table individually. The show showcased Burmese traditional dances and Chinese acrobats. Nice show with beatiful costumes and music.

    Mandalay Restaurants

After the dissapointing experience of Green Elephant, we dicided to try something local and highly recommended in our LP guidebook. It is a Shan cuisine restaurant where all cooked food is presented to the customers. You just ask what is this and that , place your order by pointing what you like and then enjoy your meal (at least you know what you...

  • Zawgyi

    3.5 out of 5 stars

    Rangoon Restaurants

Zawgyi is the place that most tourists find easily by themselves. It is located almost next to Bogyoke market and is very attractive with its nice terrace. So i usually find mostly westerners here. The food is good (the owner is a Frenchman) and there is choice in both western and asian food. Now that they have a new wood oven, the pizza is also...

I always like to go here when i am downtown and i don't feel like going anywhere a bit more fancy. Or when i'm just in a hurry. The food is very good and the price even better. It is a place that is usually packed and for a good reason. Service is good and food arrives fast. And, easy for me, it is vegetarian unless you order some meat to go with...

  • Green Elephant

    3.5 out of 5 stars

    Mandalay Restaurants

After having eaten lunch at Green Elephant in Bagan (which was one of the meals we enjoyed most) we tried our luck in their restaurant in Mandalay. The setting of the restaurant is nothing special (no views) but the grounds are very well kept with a scent of luxury (everything was wooden and nicely decorated). I wish food could follow the same, as...

  • House of Memories Restaurant

    Rangoon Restaurants

I chanced upon this restaurant during my previous visit (was it 14th or 15th? does it matter?) to Yangon. But the inspection of the house and its content brought back another connection.. of my late father visiting these premises during the time of independence. I felt i was on a pilgrimage, so it was only natural for me to invite a visitor from KL...

  • Nepali food.

    Mandalay Restaurants

The name of this small place might be fairly prosaic, and, indeed, so is the food, but none the less tasty for that. It is straightforward, well-cooked and authentic Nepali curries served in a no frills setting. The second photo shows the friendly young lad who spoke little English (although English menus are provided), served me quickly and kept...

A short taxi ride away from centre of town in The Green Elephant Restaurant. I had a pleasant and delicious dinner there in March 2004. Mandalay Restaurants

This is THE place to hang out in the morning, everyone seems to come here. It's very basic, in the local style, but the atmosphere is tremendous. Guidebook-wielding backpackers rub shoulders (literally, it can get crowded) with locals chatting, drinking tea and reading newspapers. I'm not sure if the waiters are on commission, but the service is...

As the title of this tip implies, this place is very much geared to tourists, and "upmarket" ones at that - it's not really a backpacker place. the night I was there there was a busload of middle-aged German tourists there. Ko's kitchen is a Thai restaurant with a decent menu, a pleasant "Western" style interior (it could be in London or Amsterdam)...

The Sabai Sabai restaurant is obviously a very popular restaurant judging by the number of people there when we dined there. Next to us was a table of 20 Bumese people. The food was good - a little more expensive than average for Myanmar/Burma. As an aside if you catch a taxi to the restaurant organise that it will pick you up after an hour and...

Many travellers coming to Mandalay go no further than Lashio Lay restaurant. Not that that's a major problem, it's very good (see seperate tip). Mandalay Restaurants

OK, I'm sure there are places in Mandalay that better deserve the title of THE place to be seen but judging by the numbers of scooters parked outside and the numbers of young people inside, this place must be fairly trendy. Essentially it is just another teashop serving food but it's very pleasant and a great place for people-watching. I only...

On the ground floor of the Traders Hotel is a large Indian teahouse. We bought tea and cake for about .75c - and enjoyed watching the large groups of people socialising over their tea. The restaurant has little more to buy than tea and semi stale cake, but worth it for a clean pitstop/rest stop. Refreshing tea - good for the weak of stomach!

Good info above by veronique on the Indian influenced Burmese food but there are Chinese and Shan restaurants as well. The Shan food is closer to Chinese but is spicey.
