By pickup from Mandalay to Sagaing, Sagaing

lotharscheer Says:  Pickups are leaving when full from Mandalay, 84. street near 29. street (Zegyo market) via Amarapura to Sagaing near the trainstation and market, 400 Kyat.

Local Customs

Have small bills for snacks

Have small bills for snacks, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  It would be good to have some smaller bills such as 100 and 200 Kyat notes for buying snacks outside the Payas. The vendors don't always have change for the big 1000 Kyat notes! Even though 1000 = a little over a US$1

Tourist Traps

Ticket to the Sagaing - Mingun Archaeological Zone

Ticket to the Sagaing - Mingun Archaeological Zone, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  Well this isn't really a tourist trap but could be considered one by some people. Outside of town before you cross the Ava Bridge there is a booth set up where all foreigners must pay US$3 to enter the Sagaing - Mingun Archaelolgical Zone. It also gains you entrance to all...

Local Farm

Local Farm, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  Here is a shot of a local farm that I took just outside of Sagaing. It might be interesting to try to make a homestay at a place like this. It would be awesome to see how people go about their daily lives from dawn to dusk.

More Sagaing views

More Sagaing views, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  Except for the hills right around Sagaing the area is quite flat. The trees that you can see at the bottom of my photo had a lot of squirells in them. They would stay still for me to take a photo as there were a couple of dogs on the ground barking at them.

Very long covered walkway

Very long covered walkway, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  This covered walkway went a lot further than my photo shows. For those long barefooted walks these cavered walkways sure are a lifesaver. I wondered how long the tradition has been going with the covered walkways because all of the walkways that I saw were covered in tin....

View of the area from Umin Thounzeh

herzog63 Says:  This is in March which is the dry season so everything is quite brown. I didn't notice that any burning was going on here like they do in the mountains. That style is called Slash and Burn.

Ava Bridge from Sagaing Hill

Ava Bridge from Sagaing Hill, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  From the top of Sagaing Hill you can see the massive Ava Bridge It has 16 spans and is almost 1 km long. it has 3 lanes...2 for cars and down the middle there are train tracks. There is a small fee for crossing the bridge.

Huge Monastery

Huge Monastery, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  In and around Sagaing you can find many Monasteries. Some small ones and others that have a few thousand students! You can make arrangements to visit them or at most of them it would be very easy to just show up and talk to some of the students. It might be good to talk to...

herzog63 Says:  The views were just beautiful that day. I just wished that my photos would have come out nicer. I won't forget my polarizing filter next time!

Temples ,Zedis, Payas, Monasteries

Temples ,Zedis, Payas, Monasteries, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  Saiging has so many beautiful buildings that you would have a hard time to visit them all! I don't know the name of this one but it sure is beautiful with ther Ayerwaddy river in the background.

Covered walkways

Covered walkways, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  For the most part and this is what I noticed and could be wrong...All of the Payas that are built on hills have covered walkways leading you up the hill. It does make it nice to not have to hike in 100 º temps with the sun frying your head!

More views from Umin Thounzeh

More views from Umin Thounzeh, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  As I've already mention the views are very beautiful. There are Payas everywhere. I don't think you can aim your camera and not see a paya in the viewfinder!

The steps up to Umin Thounzeh

The steps up to Umin Thounzeh, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  The steps were comfortably cool for the walk up to Umin Thounzeh. As with all Buddhist Temples in Myanmar you must remove your shoes and socks before entering the grounds. The steps here are done in white and don't absorb the heat of the sun like the darker colors that are...

View of Sagiang Hill

View of Sagiang Hill, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  This is a view of Sagaing Hill from Umin Thounzeh. The photo is quite bleached out as I didn't use my polarizing filter and should have. Alot of my photos that were taken here at Sagaing were bleached out so I appologize for that but they are the only photos that I have so...

Soon U Ponya Shin Paya

Soon U Ponya Shin Paya, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  The best views of the area are found at Soon U Ponya Shin Paya. The wind was quite cool when we were here too. It's tough to find a cool breeze in the middle of the day in Myanmar in March! Or at least it was for us.

Umin Thounzeh

Umin Thounzeh, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  Inside the "Caves" of Umin Thounzeh you will find 45 Buddha images lined along the cresent shaped wall. It is interesting but I found it very "new" looking and was more interested in the views of the area as It is set up on a hill.

My son behind bars

My son behind bars, Sagaing

herzog63 Says:  My son enjoys having fun. So he was just goofing around at the Umin Thounzeh as there are gates across every window.
