Sale is an example of Bagan's influence moving southwards along the Ayeyarwady River. Sale is a religious centre with many meditation monasteries and also the native place of the famous Sale U Ponnya, the Shakespeare of Myanmar. Another famous work of art is Myanmar's oldest wooden monastery hall, "Yoke-Sone-Kyaung" which is a cultural heritage site in Sale,situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. It is famous with its spectacular woodcarvings.
Yoke Sone Kyaung was built in AD 1882 completely of wood. There are very beautiful artistic woodcarvings to be seen and also ancient Buddha images, utensils of the socalled Yadanabon period (19th century), and of the famous writer U Pone Nya. Next to the monastery there is an old pagoda, the "Man" pagoda built in AD 1300, made partly by lacquer ware.

Mt. Popa (1518 m high) is considered the home and abode of Burma's most powerful nats and as such is the most important nat worship center. Many Burmese pilgrims visit Mt. Popa every year, especially at Festival season on the full moon of Nayon (May/June) and the full moon of Nadaw (November/December). This festival is known as Taunghyon (near Mandalay). Before King Anawrahta's time, thousands of animals were sacrificed to the nats during festivals. Burmese superstition says that on Mt. Popa, one should not wear red or black or bring meat, especially pork, as it could offend the resident nats.
