Local Transport

Local Transport, Inbawhkon

herzog63 Says:  The only other way to get around is either swim or walk. But I think even walking very far would prove difficult as there are floating gardens in the area and the buildings are all built on stilts. I'm not sure of how much solid ground is in the area if any at all.

Local Customs

Lake weed gathering

Lake weed gathering, Inbawhkon

herzog63 Says:  The same weed gatherers where seen here as well as around the other villages that we visited. These weeds are used for building floating gardens and for fertilizer. And it keeps the waterways from being over grown.

On the waters edge

On the waters edge, Inbawhkon

herzog63 Says:  All of the local cleaning is done on the waters edge. Washing dishes, taking a bath, washing vegetables etc.. It is all done on a small dock that all of the homes had. I'm sure stomach diseases and other ailments are common here as sanitation is not of the highest standards....

Off The Beaten Path

Time to fix up the veranda

herzog63 Says:  Most of the homes were well kept. But I noticed this one was in need of repair. There are many villages that have this stuff drying in the sun so repairs can be made very cheaply.

Small Docks

Small Docks, Inbawhkon

herzog63 Says:  Every home has a small dock very similar to this one and some of the families had the very long style of boat which is better for traveling long distances on the lake.

herzog63 Says:  I just loved the view of "Mainstreet" It sure doesn't look like any Mainstreet here in my hometown of Kodiak but it sure is beautiful.

Maintaining the Floating Gardens

herzog63 Says:  There seemed to be a never ending cycle of repairing and upkeep on the gardens. And also building new ones.

My son on a floating garden

herzog63 Says:  Here you can see my son standing on one of the floating gardens. This is built over 20 feet of water. They use layers of weeds and mud to build it and it is very fertile! When you stand on it you can feel it slowly sink. With my weight I went up to my knees before it stopped...

Taking it slow....

herzog63 Says:  They pace of life here seemed pretty laid back and slow.....It made me stop and think about my life back home....I need to slow down and smell the roses!

The big wheel going to the loom

The big wheel going to the loom, Inbawhkon

herzog63 Says:  These big wheels of silk where being fed to the weavers that worked the looms. A very interesting process. It was also quite cool in the big wooden buildings too!

Spinning Wheel

herzog63 Says:  To prepare the silk for weaving there was a dyeing process then a rinsing process and a drying process. This is part of the rinsing process. I didn't check out all of the processes indepth. I was more interested in just taking in the aptmospere.

No pavement needed for these driveways

No pavement needed for these driveways, Inbawhkon

herzog63 Says:  The people that live in these watery villages don't have to deal with paving the driveway! They have to make sure their driveway doesn't get filled in with debri.

Houses and Factories
